1. What is your full name?

Hi, My first name is Shruti and my family name is Sinha.

2. What can I call you?

3. Could you tell me where you come from?

I come from Delhi – the capital of India. It’s a metropolitan city with population roughly
equivalent to that of Canada.

#2 HOMETOWN

4. What do you like most about your hometown?

There are handful of things that I love about my hometown:

Delhi is best known for its exquisite food offerings. The street food is scrumptious
and appetizing.
Most importantly, the hospitality and love among Delhites is extraordinary.

5. What do you dislike most about your hometown?

Only thing I dislike about my hometown is the traffic congestion. Delhi is over-populated
city and as such there are frequent traffic jams, which are barely managed by the
authorities.

6. Is your hometown a popular place for tourists?

Absolutely! Delhi is a capital and a heritage city. Every year thousands of tourists visit the
place to closely witness Indian culture and traditions. Moreover, there are centuries old
temples, which are the major attractions of tourism.

7. Do you think your hometown has changed much in recent years?

Yes, my hometown has changed drastically in the last 5 years.

With the rising per capita income every year, people are now demanding more and
demanding better.
Earlier, there were only few metalled roads; but now all the roads are made world-
class.

8. Do you work or study?

I have been working as a Project Associate at IBM for about five years now. I mainly look
after software development operations for overseas clients.

computer graphics and animation.

9. What is your job?

As I mentioned, I am on a Project payroll at the company. IBM offers umbrella of digital

services to the clients. My job is to assess needs of our customers and provide them
better software solutions while working with a team.

10. Why did you choose this job?

I am a passionate computer programmer and I’ve been into this field for so many years.
This is why, I choose to work with IBM on Software development.

11. Is it a popular job in your country?

Certainly, the job in the IT enabled services is gaining momentum in my country. With
rapid digitization, from local shop owners to large retailers, everybody wants to serve their
customers digitally.

12. What subjects are you studying?

I am presently studying 3D Graphic designing and basic computer programming

languages. I hope to master them in the next six-months.

13. Do you like your subject? Why/Why not?

Oh Yes, definitely! I like my subject. It has a lot of future potential. Moreover, I aspire to
join Google in the future and I hope my current study will serve that purpose.

14. Do you prefer to study in the mornings or afternoons?

Frankly, I am a night owl. I prefer to study in the afternoon till late at night. I am more
focused during the night hours.

15. Do you prefer manual or e-dictionary?

I largely prefer to the online dictionaries than the manual ones. The reason being, e-
dictionaries are user-friendly and easy to carry. I currently use Merriam Webster
dictionary in my smartphone.

16. Is it helpful?

Indeed, the dictionary is very much helpful to solve my day to day queries. While
communicating with people abroad, I come across a lot of new words which I then search
in the dictionary.

17. Can you write a dictionary?

Yes, as a matter of fact, the work of writing a dictionary is in progress.

I list down all new words of the day in my MS Word document before the bedtime. I am
happy to tell you that it is now 400+ words strong.

#5 MUSIC

18. What kind of music do you like?

I like listening soft, chilled out music. It resonates with my personality. Whereas, I find
loud music quite annoying.

19. Will it change in the future?

No, I don’t think my preferences will change in the future. Because my soul likes this
music, and you can’t replace your soul..can we??

20. Did you listen music more before?

I think when I was in school/college, I was all into music. But now, I get less time to enjoy
these compositions.

21. Do you prefer buying CD or download music?

I always prefer to download songs in my mobile and listen them on the go. Buying and
preserving CD’s is much of a hassle. Whereas, you can be as ruthless as you want with
the download versions and they ‘ll still play for you.

23. Why do people prefer to go to restaurants?

Most people visit restaurants to break the monotony of their lives. So they go to
restaurants to try new cuisine which they normally don’t cook in their homes.

24. Does it worth the money we pay at restaurants?

Yes, I think the restaurant food is worth every penny we pay for. This is because, cafe’s
not only serve us the food; they teach us table etiquettes and how to eat in a civilised
way.

#7 NATURE
25. What are the main agricultural products in your country?

Well, farmers grow all kinds of vegetables and cereals. In the south, they cultivate a lot of
rice, and I think that in northern India, corn, wheat and barley are more commonly found.

26. Do you have a pet?

No, I don’t. I live in an apartment in the city. It just doesn’t make much sense to get a dog
or a cat in a small apartment. I think that animals should have the option to spend time
outside. Animals might be happier outside, don’t you think?

27. Do you like birds?

Not really, although I have nothing against them. I think that parrots look cool, with their
colourful feathers, and small parakeets also sound funny, especially when they can talk
and imitate our voices．

28. Do any flowers in your country have a special meaning?

Yes, I think that every flower has a special meaning. Of course, everyone knows that
roses represent love and that carnations stand for the love for a mother. But my
grandfather also taught me that lilies are pure while violets symbolize loyalty or
faithfulness.

#8 POLLUTION
29. Are traffic jams a problem at your hometown?

Yes, definitely! Every morning around 9 and every single evening after 5:30, it’s rush hour
and traffic gets congested. It’s a big waste of time for everybody to get stuck in traffic.

30. Do you feel that transport systems are getting better where you live?

No, it is getting worse. Although there are definitely more buses than in the past, there
are also many more people living in my city than 10 years ago. So buses are packed all
the time. In addition, since the economy is developing, many people are making good
money and they can afford to buy an automobile. As a result, many people drive their own
car in the morning instead of using public transportation.

31. Do people in your country worry about the environment?

Unfortunately, I think that people only worry about the environment when they are really
facing the problem. If the issue is happening in another province, people tend to ignore it.

32. What can we do to protect the environment?

Well, first we should recycle. We can recycle plastic, paper, and glass. We should learn
how to live without consuming so much. In addition, no one should litter（＝throw rubbish
on the ground), and we should all try to save water. Naturally, we should walk and ride our
bikes whenever possible. Finally, we ought to ask the government to frame laws, even if
they seem drastic extreme at first.

#9 TRAVEL
33. Do you enjoy traveling?

For sure！I love traveling but I don’t get many chances to do so. As a student, I don’t
have much time during the school year, and I don’t have much money to spend on
holidays. However, last summer, I went to Ladakh with my best friend, and I must say it
was really a cool car trip．

34. If you could go to any foreign country for a holiday, where would you go?

I would love to go to America！it’s a huge country and there is so much to see. I would
like to visit New York City – to see the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, Wall Street, and
do some shopping on the 5th Avenue．

35. What do you like to do on holiday?

Well, I like to go back home and spend time with my relatives during the holidays．My
university is located pretty far away from my hometown, so I don’t get to see my parents
at any other time. My mother usually cooks a lot of great food for me. I usually go for a
walk with my Dad. The three of us sometimes go shopping．I generally take advantage
of the vacation to take it easy and recharge my batteries.

36. Do you think it’s good for young people to travel?

Yes, definitely! Traveling is a great opportunity for young people to see something new
and learn about different cultures. In addition, they can meet new people, and open up
their minds to the world. They need to realize the differences between their daily lives and
other people’s routines and customs.

37. How long have you been studying English?

Well, I started studying English in primary school, when I was 6 years old I think. So it has
been 14 years already. That’s a long time, but it’s still a work in progress…It takes a long
time to master a foreign language, especially when students like me can’t immerse
ourselves completely in an English environment.

38. How important is English to you?

English is extremely important to me because next year I plan to continue my studies in

Canada. So I need my English to be good enough to understand the teachers there, and
to communicate with the local people.

39. Which languages would you like to learn?

I would love to speak French, because it sounds very cool and romantic. In addition, one
of my dreams is to travel to Paris, and see the Eiffel Tower and Louvre.

#11 FESTIVALS
40. Do you often celebrate festivals in your country?

Yes！We celebrate a lot of national festivals in India. Diwali, Holi, Christmas, New year..
are some of the most important ones．

41. Do these festivals have special meanings?

Yes, naturally. Each festival is meaningful. They are all based on Indian history, and they
remind us of the past which forms an important part of our identity.

42. What special things do people do during festivals?

Well, it really depends on which festival we are celebrating. But usually people decor their
homes, goes for a big meal or set off firecrackers to express their happiness and share
their joy.

43. Do you celebrate any foreign festivals?

I celebrate Christmas with my family and friends. We go to church, recite prayers and
then have a nice buffet at a local restaurant.

44. Which is your favourite festival?

I really enjoy Diwali Festival because it brings my family closer together. We get to spend
time with each other and catch up over some great food. We eat a lot of snacks, and set
off fireworks.

#12 GOING OVERSEAS

45. Why are you planning to spend a period of time abroad?

Well, I intend to continue my studies in Australia for a variety of reasons. First, I want to
get a Master’s in electrical engineering in order to learn more about my major and
become a specialist in my field. In addition, if I do get a degree from an Australian
university, I will have more options, more choices for my future．

46. How have your family and friends supported you in this?

Well, it was actually my father’s idea to start with, and then my parents have really
encouraged me a lot while I have been studying English. They also gave me advice when
I was looking for some info on different Australian universities.

47. How long do you plan to be abroad?

I plan to live in Sydney for two years in order to complete my degree. I might stay longer if
I find an internship（＝ practical training in a company) or a job afterwards.

48. How exactly will you benefit from this experience?

I should benefit a lot from this experience. First, I will acquire more knowledge in my field.
I know that my university will provide me with two internships, so I will definitely get some
practical skills on top of the theories we learn in class．

49. What problems do you think you may have abroad?

Well, I expect to face some difficulties with the language at first, especially with reading.
Teachers warned me that I will have to read a lot as a student, and I read very slowly in
English. However, once I overcome this language barrier, everything should be easier. I
should be able to communicate, and make friends there.

50. How do you think Australia/America/Canada…will be different from India?

Well, first with regards to my studies, I expect the classes to be based on communication
rather than just having the teacher giving us a lecture. In India, we never get to talk in
class, and teachers don’t ask for our point of view, but things should be different in
Australia.

#13 FUTURE
51. What qualities are necessary to do your future job?

Well, being hard-working is essential to becoming a good manager. In addition, I should

be specialised in my field, in order to make the right decisions and show my staff how
things should be done.

52. What do you see yourself doing in 10 years’ time?

Well, that’s hard to say because 10 years is a long time away, but I might be a manager in
a company here in India. I’m ambitious and I hope I can achieve my goals. I really want to
get promoted as high as possible, as quick as possible.

53. What is your main ambition in life?

My short term ambition is to go to Canada and get a Bachelor’s degree in computer

engineering. And in the long run（＝in the long term) I would like to set up my own
company and be successful. You know, working for myself would offer me a lot of
freedom, and hopefully a great income to lead a comfortable life in the future.

54. Is it always good to be ambitious?

Yes, definitely！Ambitions drive success. They can motivate you, and keep you going. It’s
always positive as long as you remain humble. You shouldn’t be over ambitious,
otherwise you might get disappointed if things don’t work out as expected.

55. What is the best age to get married?

9/10
Well, it depends on the individual, of course. But I don’t think that people should get
married too young anymore, because both men and women should focus on their studies
and their careers, in order to find a good position, and a stable job in order to make
enough money to actually enjoy fife as a couple. I think that getting married around 30
seems like a wise choice.

56. How do you think your life will be different when you are retired?

I hope I could save enough money in order to enjoy a peaceful life when I retire. If I am
healthy, I would like to travel around my country, and maybe around the world with my
family. And when I am home, I could spend time with my grandchildren, and teach them
how to play sports, and maybe tell them some stories about the past.
