IV. ABSTRACT

Cyberbullying has become a serious problem as a result of their increased usage

of social media. Previous literature surveys did not cover cyberbullying research in 2014

and cyberbullying risk variables in depth. This review of the literature examines

cyberbullying study areas such as college’s usage of social media, themes from

cyberbullying studies conducted since 2012, cyberbullying risk factors, and how

teenagers deal with cyberbullying occurrences. Current cyberbullying research has

focused on concerns such as the large number of cyberbullying occurrences in schools,

greater personal information disclosure on social media, peer effects, and the safety of

the school environment for both bully and victim. Studies on cyberbullying risk factors

have sparked disputes about whether males or girls are more prone to be

victims/cyberbullies. Combating cyberbullying necessitates raising awareness,

educating cyberbullying actors, developing software to identify cyberbullying, and

including actors in cyberbullying monitoring.

V. INTRODUCTION

The content of our research paper is all about “The Impact of Cyber Bullying on

Academic and Social Media in Aldersgate College College Students”, that base on our

survey almost all students use internet and experienced cyberbullying.

The growth of technology and social media in our modern interconnected

society has brought many benefits, but it has also given rise to a terrible phenomenon

known as cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is the intentional and repetitive use of digital

communication tools to harass, threaten, or hurt others, such as social media platforms,

instant messaging, or online forums.

Cyberbullying, unlike traditional kinds of bullying, crosses physical boundaries

and operates in the digital environment, making it widespread and difficult to escape.

Because individuals can be targeted at any time, and the anguish can spread quickly to

a large audience, its anonymity and 24/7 accessibility amplify its impact. Spreading

stories, exposing private or humiliating information, publishing harsh remarks, creating

phony profiles, or even participating in online hate campaigns are all examples of
7

cyberbullying. It has far-reaching implications, frequently causing significant emotional

discomfort, low self-esteem, social isolation, and even bodily harm.

Children, teenagers, and vulnerable people are especially vulnerable to

cyberbullying because they are navigating the nuances of social interactions online.

People of all ages, however, can be victims of digital aggression, hurting their mental

health, well-being, and overall quality of life. To effectively address cyberbullying, it is

critical to raise awareness, promote digital literacy, and promote empathy and

appropriate online behavior. We can work together to build a safer and more inclusive

digital world for all persons by understanding the nature and impact of cyberbullying.
8

CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Rationale

VI. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Cyberbullying has developed as a critical issue in today's digital culture, posing a

slew of issues that necessitate our urgent attention and collective action. The following

are some of the most serious issues linked with cyberbullying:

1. Emotional and psychological distress: Cyberbullying leaves its victims with deep

emotional scars. The constant online ridicule, humiliation, and threats can cause anxiety,

sadness, low self-esteem, and even suicidal ideation. The psychological impact can be

long-lasting, hurting those targeted entire well-being and mental health.

9

2. Pervasive and Unrelenting Nature: Unlike conventional bullying, cyberbullying follows

its victims wherever they go. The digital arena provides a 24/7 platform for pain, making

it difficult to avoid the harsh messages, images, and rumors. The persistent worry of

being observed can drastically damage one's regular life and sense of safety.

3. Amplification and Permanence: The viral nature of internet content exacerbates

cyberbullying's impact. Hurtful and embarrassing statements can spread quickly

through social media platforms, reaching a large audience in seconds. Furthermore,

once shared, such content can be nearly impossible to totally remove, resulting in long-

term implications for the victims.

4. Impact on Education and Well-being: Academic performance and educational

possibilities suffer as a result of cyberbullying. Students who are cyberbullied frequently

fail to concentrate, which leads to decreased motivation, absenteeism, and bad marks.

The negative repercussions on their well-being can impair personal development, social

development, and overall academic achievement.

5. Challenges in Identification and Reporting: Cyberbullying can take place

anonymously or through phony profiles, making it harder to identify perpetrators.

Victims may be afraid of retaliation or lack faith in the effectiveness of reporting

instances, perpetuating the cycle of abuse. Inadequate reporting systems and

inconsistent reactions from authorities make it even more difficult to resolve

cyberbullying incidents.
10

Addressing cyberbullying issues involves comprehensive methods that include

education, awareness campaigns, digital literacy initiatives, stronger legislation, and

supporting interventions. We can energize efforts to eliminate cyberbullying and build a

safer and more compassionate digital environment for all persons by recognizing these

challenges.

VIII. CONCLUSION

Cyberbullying has been determined to have a considerable negative impact on

students’ academic achievement, according to the study that has been conducted as of

May 2023. The following is the conclusion with reference to this:

The subject of cyberbullying has become growing and has a negative impact on

the academic success of students. Many research investigations have shown a clear

correlation between incidents of cyberbullying and academic challenges. The frequent

acts of cyberstalking, cyber threats, blackmail, impersonation, and humiliation that

19

victims (college students) endure online may seriously affect their abilities to

concentrate, participation in educational activities, and academic performance.

Cyberbullying's psychological and emotional toll, including increased stress,

anxiety, and depression as well as decreased academic performance, can negatively

affect students' cognitive development and general well-being, which in turn has a

negative impact on their academic performance.

The continuous nature of cyberbullying can also cause ongoing distractions for

victims, who are preoccupied with worrying about additional online assaults and

attempting to escape the abusive setting. This obsession with the cyberbullying cases

has the potential to negatively affect academic success by reducing focus,

compromising time management, and compromising study habits.

Academic issues can be made worse by the social effects of cyberbullying, such

as social isolation and difficulty forming strong bonds with peers. Students may feel

excluded, confused, and like they don't belong, which can cause them to lose interest in

learning, participate less in class, and perform worse academically.

Schools, parents, and teachers must acknowledge the negative effects that

cyberbullying has on students' academic performance and take aggressive steps to

address it. A conducive learning environment can be created for all students by

implementing comprehensive prevention and intervention strategies that encourage a

20

positive online environment, teach students about responsible digital citizenship, and

offer support and counseling services.

IX. SUMMARY

In summary, the effects of cyberbullying on students' academic achievement are

unfavorable. Their willingness to focus, participate in courses of study, and function

academically is highly affected. Academic performance is directly affected by the

psychological and emotional toll, which includes elevated stress, anxiety, and

depressive symptoms. These conditions affect cognitive function and general well-

being. Victims frequently report a decline in motivation, a decline in self-esteem, and a

21

decline in confidence to participate effectively in school. Because cyberbullying is

persistent, it causes constant preoccupation and attention, which impairs focus, time

management, and study habits.

Academic challenges become even worse by social consequences including

social isolation and trouble forming relationships that last. The feeling of exclusion and

disengagement among students may lower their engagement in class and academic

performance. To lessen the negative impact of cyberbullying on academic achievement,

institutions must develop comprehensive preventative and intervention methods that

promote a good online environment, teach students about responsible digital

citizenship, and offer support services.
