Math 4-Quarter 3-Week 8-Module 8

This document provides a lesson on differentiating between perimeter and area. It begins with an introduction explaining the key differences - area measures the space inside a shape while perimeter measures the distance around the outside. Several examples are then given to illustrate how to calculate each. A comparison chart further outlines the definitions, units of measurement, and common uses of area and perimeter. The document concludes with some practice problems for students to solidify their understanding of differentiating between these two mathematical concepts.

What’s the difference between area and perimeter?

The goal of this lesson is to help you understand the difference
between area and perimeter. In simplest terms: area is the
amount of space inside a shape, and perimeter is the distance
around outside of the shape.

What is area?
Area measures the number of square units that can fit on the
inside of a shape. If you copied a shape onto grid paper, the area
would be the number of squares that the shape covers up.
The main idea is that area is the amount of space on the inside of
the shape.
Illustrate:

10 squares

Count the number of squares. How many squares are there? 10

squares fit inside the shape, so the area is 10 square units. The
number of squares that fit in the inside of the shape is the area of
the shape.

Therefore, area is the amount of space occupied by a closed

figure.
Units for Area
Area is a 2 dimensional space or region occupied by a closed
figure. It is always measured in square units like square meter or
m2, square centimeters or cm2, square inches or inches2.
Usage
Area can be used to calculate the size of the carpet to cover the
whole floor of a room or to tile a bathroom.

What is a Perimeter?
Perimeter measure the distance around the outside of the
shape. Think about it as if you’re about to put a fence around the
outside of the shape and you need to know the length of the
fence.
Illustrate:

2
2
1 2
2 The distance around
3
is 14
2

Count the spaces around the outside of the shape. The distance
around it is 14. This means that the perimeter is 14 units.
Perimeter is the distance around a closed figure.
Unit for Perimeter
Perimeter is always measured in linear unit. Example 5 m or 5
meters, 14 cm or 14 centimeters, 2 inches or 2 in2.

Usage
Perimeter can be used to calculate the length of fence
required to surround a yard or a garden.
To better understand the two concepts and their differences.
Let’s have another example:

This is a graph of a square

yard. The brown boarder is a
Area fence, while the green square is
the grass.
The perimeter of this square
is the length of the fence, while
the area of this square is the

Problem 1:

Chalix and his classmates are busy cleaning the garden of San
Marcelino Elementary School. If the area of the school garden is 850, 000
sq. cm., what is its equivalent in square meters?

How will you solve the problem?

Let’s study this:

Remember: 10, 000 square meter = 1 sq. m.
850, 000 sq. cm. = _________ sq. m.

Solution:
850, 000 sq. cm. x 1 sq. m._______
10, 000 sq. cm.
= 850, 000 sq. m
850, 000/ 10, 000
10, 000
= 85 sq. m.

Therefore, 850, 000 sq. cm. is equivalent to 85 sq. m.

Notice that 850, 000 sq. cm. is divided by 10, 000. Since
centimeter is a unit smaller than meter we divided it by 10, 000.
Let’s study another problem.
Problem 2:
Kitty wanted to find out how many square centimeters
there are n 23 square meter.

Do you want to help Kitty? So, let’s help her solve for the answer.

Remember: 1 sq. m. = 10, 000 sq. cm.

23 sq. m. = ________ sq. cm.
Solution:
23 sq. m. = 23 sq. m. x 10, 000 sq. cm
1 sq. m.
= 230, 000 sq. cm.

Therefore, there are 230, 000 sq. cm. in 23 square meter.

Notice that 23 sq. m. is multiplied by 10, 000.

Since meter is a unit bigger than centimetre we multiply by 10,

000.

Let’s study these examples:

Solution
1. 1 sq. m. = 10, 000 sq. cm. 1 x 10, 000
2. 2 sq. m. = 20, 000 sq. cm. 2 x 10, 000

3. 20, 000 sq. cm = 2 sq. m. 20, 000 / 10, 000

4. 21, 000 sq. cm = 2.1 sq. m. 21, 000 / 10, 000

For numbers 1 and 2, from bigger unit to smaller unit, so

multiply by 10, 000.
For numbers 3 and 4, from smaller unit to bigger unit, so
divide by 10, 000.

Now, you already learned how to convert square meter to
