Case Study 1 - SSCM220
Case Study 1 - SSCM220
Due: At the Date of the final exam and by the end of the scheduled final exam time.
This is a team assignment. Each team can have two students (maximum). Team members are advised
to work together to – understand and analyze the two questions, conduct Excel computations and write
down the answers. Each team will submit one report (including answers and attachments) on due date.
Refer to the Hospital database, which includes hospital related activities and expenses (See Excel file
Hospital Database in Canvas).
Focus on the column labeled ”Births” only
(a) Create a histogram showing the distribution of the number of births in hospitals.
(b) Calculate appropriate numerical summaries to show measures of central tendency and
variability. Write a brief report explaining the measures of central tendency and variability.
(c) Compare the data with the Empirical Rule.
Prepare a brief descriptive report. Your report should answer the following questions.
(a) Record the points scored by the winning team in 50 college football games played last weekend
(if you are not a football fan, do the same for basketball or another sport of your choice). If you
can’t find 50 scores do the best you can. Show your data in a table format.
(b) Make a histogram and describe the histogram.
(c) Calculate the mean, median, and mode(s). What is the best measure of central tendency? Why?
(d) Calculate the standard deviation and coefficient of variation? Provide your comments.
(e) Compare the data with the Empirical Rule.
Answer both the questions. Your response will include the appropriate graphs and a paragraph or two
explaining your results. Do not include the raw data sets for the first question. Remember that your
reports will be evaluated based on the correctness of your results and presentation of your results. It is
very important in business world not only to carry out accurate calculations but also to communicate
your findings effectively.
Be sure to follow all case guidelines and remember that this is “the real world” – don’t refer to INSS
220, a “case”, etc. Before writing your report, make sure you read the ‘Case Guideline’ instructions
from pages 7 and 8 of the course syllabus. The instructor will show you necessary Excel commands in
class for each of the topics covered in this course.
