Location - Cagayan is located in the northeast of Luzon Island and includes the babuyan Islands to the north.
The province border Ilocos Norte and Apayao to the west, and kalinga and Isabela to the south. Its capital is
Tuguegarao.
Cagayan River- the country’s longest river runs through its center and flows out to Luzon Strait in the north, in
the town of Aparri, Cagayan.
Political Profile - The Cagayan Valley comprises 5 provinces namely: Batanes, Cagayan, Nueva Viscaya, Isabela
and Quirino. 4 cities (Cauayan, Ilagan, Santiago, Tuguegarao) 89 municipalities, and 2,311 barangays.
Culture of Cagayan is showcased in museums, historical buildings and archeological sites spread across the
province.
Beliefs and Traditions
1. Clothing -They wear simple clothes. Old women wore fun and kimono while men used Camisa de Chino or
the barong tag. The Japanese have influence.
2. The family is very close. All stay with their parents.
3. Before marriage, Ilocano children will ask for approval of the same set of parents first. Parents decide if they
want to agree to let their children get married. It was his parents who would pay the dowry and finance the
marriage. An argument is when a boy expresses his desire for the girl to marry his parents.
4. They sing old songs, proverbs, and poems alongside puzzles, melodies, and the vocabulary produced by
Ibanags.
Fashion
Men usually wear shorts and shirts and women have skirts or shorts with shirts. There are also farmers who
wear hats for protection from the sun too.
Province of Batanes
Batanes is a province in the Philippines situated in the Cagayan Valley Region. It is know as the “Home of the
Winds” and has amazing coastlines. Batanes is the northernmost and the smallest province in the country,
both in land and population.
CAPITAL- Basco
Lies on a group of Islands collectively called Batanes Island and they are northernmost Island of the
Philippines. They are located between the Babuyan Island ( belonging to Cagayan Province) and Taiwan.
Culture- The Ivatan people are an Austronesian ethnolinguistic group native to the Batanes and Babuyan
Islands of the northernmost Philippines. They are genetically closely related to other ethnic groups in Northern
Luzon, but also share close linguistic and cultural affinities to the Tao people of Orchid Island in Taiwan.
beliefs and traditions in Batanes Province are deeply rooted in the island's history, natural environment, and
the resilience of its people. This unique cultural heritage contributes to the charm and distinct identity of the
province.
Ivatan is the main language that is spoken in Batanes. It is a dominant languange in the province and is
considered to be one of the Austronesian languages.
PALU-PALO FESTIVAL
This festival is an annual celebration in the northern part of the Philippines which
showcase the livelihood and culture of Ivatans in Basco, Batanes. It is a cultural
festival that features a variety of ethnic groups in the different municipalities of
Batanes representing their respective heritage and culture. From the name itself,
“palu-palo” is a stick used by Ivatans in the past to fight against colonizers. This town
festival celebrated every first week of August is one the must-see feasts in the
Philippines where in people get to see the rich lands of Batanes, have a taste of their delicacies, and learn
more about its history.

Kulay Festival
For Ivatans, “Kulay” is a native term which means “anything dried” that may
imply dried products such as onion, garlic, rice, corn and fish among others,
proudly manufactured within their locality.
The five (5) day celebration aims to promote the preserved rich cultural heritage
of Batanes and introduce their locally manufactured food products to local and
international tourist visiting their province.

Cagayan Province
Cagayan came from “Catagayan” which means a place where the tagay grows
abundantly was shortened to Cagayan. Cagayan, also known as “Land of Smiling Beauty” has traditionally
been a tourist stop for old spanish churches.
Located- at the northeast of Luzon Island, and includes the Babuyan Island to the north.
It is the center of excellence in Education, Commerce, Trade and Culture as the Ecnomic Center of Region 2.
The main farm products are rice, rootcrops, vegetables, poultry and hogs. There are some fishponds within
city limits and Cagayan River provides some of the fish supplies of the residents.
Ibanag, Itawes and Ilocano (in varied shades and intonation) and Malaueg are the major dialects of Cagayan.
Due to migration, Ilocano became the dominant language spoken in the province.
Beliefs in Cagayan Province are diverse, reflecting the interplay of indigenous customs, Catholicism, and local
traditions. This cultural tapestry adds to the province's unique identity and heritage.

Isabela Day: Bambanti Festival (held every May 1 to 11 – it is the anniversary of the establishment of the civil
government of Isabela in honor of Queen Isabela II.)
Alegria de Isabela (held every July 8 - a festival based on a legend that tells how the early townsfolk survived a
raging storm, where St. Isabela was seen blocking a giant wave.)

Culture
Nueva Vizcaya is home to about 18 indigenous peoples, which includes the major tribes of the Ifugao (Quezon,
Bagabag, Kasibu), Gaddang (Solano and Bayombong), Isinai (Dupax del Sur and Bambang), Dumagat (Aritao),
Kalanguya (Santa Fe), and the Bugkalot (Alfonso Castañeda and Dupax del Norte).
Beliefs
The Gaddang believe in two kinds of illness: the sickness caused by evil spirits, and the hurt or injury suffered
in accidents such as those caused by falling, muscle sprains, and insect bites.

Held every May 19-24, the Panagyaman Festival is the Anniversary of the
establishment of the civil government of Nueva Vizcaya. Activities include street
parades,street dancing, cultural shows, float parades and contest, sports events by
municipality, agroindustrial fairs, others. It is celebrated with parades, beauty
pageant, trade shows, and agro-industrial fair, among others.
Quirino Province

Quirino Province lies in the southeastern portion of Cagayan Valley Region within the upper Cagayan River
Basin. Aurora bounds it on the east and southeast, Isabela on the north, and Nueva Vizcaya on the west and
southwest. Long time ago, Quirino was the forest region of the of the Province of Nueva Vizcaya.
-Is a landlocked province in the Philippines located in the Cagayan Valley region in Luzon and named after
Elpidio Quirino, the sixth president of the Philippines
-It has 6 municipalities namely Aglipay, Cabarrouguis, Diffun, Maddela, Nagtipunan, and Saglupay. And 132
barangays.
Beliefs- Quirino is predominantly Roman Catholic with 54 percent adherence while Evangelicals and United
Methodist Church serve as significant minorities with up to 20% of the population. Some people still practice
indigenous beliefs.
Culture- “The Quirino's cultural heritage of the Dumagats, Ifugaos, Isinays, Bugkalots, and Gaddang indigenous
folk, and lowland villagers like the Ilocanos are always cherished for their contributions in the province,”
Quirino’s major dialect is Ilocano. Other people use Ifugao, Tagalog, Ilongot, Pangasinense, Kankanai and other
dialects that are common in the region of the country.
