Software

refers to a set of programs instructions that tell a computer how to perform specific

tasks. It encompasses a wide range of applications and systems that enable

computers to operate and execute various functions. Software can be broadly

categorized into two main types

System Software

The software that controls the resources and enables user interaction with the

system is known as system software. It manages the internal operations of a

computer, mostly via the operating system. It also oversees peripherals, such as

monitors, printers, and storage units. Different types of System Software:

a. Operating System: The operating system (OS) is a fundamental type of system

software that manages hardware resources and provides essential services for

computer programs. It facilitates communication between software and hardware

components, manages file systems, and enables multitasking.

Example of OS:

b. Utility Programs: Utility programs are specialized tools that assist in managing

and maintaining the computer system. Examples include antivirus software, disk

cleanup tools, file compression utilities, and system monitoring tools.

Example of utility programs:

c. Compilers and Interpreters: Compilers and interpreters are essential for

programming. Compilers translate entire programs written in high-level programming

languages into machine code, which can be executed by the computer. Interpreters,

on the other hand, translate and execute code line by line, without generating a

separate machine code file.

4

Application Software:

Application software includes programs designed for specific tasks and user

applications. These can range from productivity tools like word processors and

spreadsheets to graphics design software, video editors, and gaming applications.

examples of application software

Office, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Firefox, Chrome, Apple Music, Spotify,

Zoom, etc.

Software Distribution Methods:

Software distribution methods refer to the ways in which software is made available

to users. Common methods include:

a. Direct downloads from website

Software is distributed online in an electronic format. Online resources offer users the

ability to download and install the software. This was the sole digital distribution

channel that was accessible. Each program needed to be downloaded from the

internet or purchased on a physical media (CD, DVD, USB drive, or even floppy

disk!). Even though other models have become more popular, this one can still feel

outdated.

b. Digital distribution

Digital distribution is the delivery (through downloading) of any digital content,

including audio, e-books, games, PDFs, pictures, software, and video. Digital

distribution is handled through a digital distribution platform designed to stream the

digital content or allow the content to be downloaded in

full.

Examples of Digital distribution: Netflix,Steam,Prime etc.

7

c. Cloud Marketplace: Software is accessed and used over the internet through cloud

services. Users do not need to install the software locally but can access it remotely.

the delivery of hosted services over the internet. A cloud can be public or private,

with a public cloud selling services to anyone with internet access.

d. App Stores: Software is distributed through centralized app stores where users

can discover, download, and install applications on their devices. Ex. Google

play,App Gallery
