Essential Elements in the Achievement of Education for
Sustainability, Theme: Education for Sustainability”
Author:
Richard Sack
Question:
Give specific situations in your school/district where
the principles on policy, planning and management may be
applied.
Answer:
According to Richard Sack the ability of educational systems to
respond to the awesome challenges of sustainable development
will have everything to do with how policymaking, planning and
management are organized and carried out.
Policy, Planning and Management plays a vital role in achieving
goals and objectives not only in educational system and its
institutions but also in any form of systems and institutions
and undeniably in every institution specifically in education
encounters a lot of challenges both expected and unforeseen
problems that is why policies should be implemented with proper
planning and rigid management.
For instance, these are some of the situations in our
School/District that policy, planning and management may be
applied;
a. Student, Faculty, and staffs’ welfare,
b. Student attendance and performance, and
c. Student, Faculty, and staffs’ school activities and
community engagement.
A. Student, Faculty, and staffs’ welfare
The welfare of student, faculty and staffs’ must be the top
priority of every education institution as its social
effort designed to promote the basic physical and material
well-being of every individual and the protection of rights
to education, a safe space environment and security.
The school management should have good planning in school
environment and security to ensure the welfare of student,
faculty, and staffs such as; free from bullying, vices,
gender-friendly and free from physical abuse or harm and
sexual abuse from peers, teachers and other people and etc.
A school/student handbook should be updated from time to
time regarding on the rules and policies to be implemented
and to inform and educate not only the student but should
also be raised during teacher-parent conference to
conceptualize a harmonious and wholesome rules and policies
applicable to everyone and not just for some.
B. Student attendance and performance
The student attendance is considered as the major factor
that may greatly affects on the academic performance of
student both positive and negative results whereas the
teachers’ attendance may lead to a possibility of success
and failures of institutions goals and objectives in
producing quality education and competent individuals.
Student absenteeism is one of the root causes of students’
low academic performance, that is why it should be
addressed properly to save the students from failing. Home-
visitation program must be planned so that if in case
student may commit continuous absences this type of
intervention will be a great help to identify the student
reasons, situations, and sometimes personal life
investigations. Through this home-visitation program to
understand comes first and suggested solutions may be
arranged.
C. Student, Faculty, and staffs’ school activities and
community engagement
The student, faculty, and staffs’ community engagement will
contribute to a more diverse and socialized education
institution and both school and community will serve as a
support system to each other’s programs and activities.
The school administration should have a good planning in
academic calendar of activities in both school-based and
outside school in academic and extra co-curricular
activities. In addition, rules and policies should be
implemented to secure the validity and according to the
academic, social, and spiritual needs of students, faculty,
and staff. A creative mind of leadership in management a
different school activities and community engagement to
produce and organized a well prepared events.
Conclusions;
Education plays a vital role in producing quality
education and a well-rounded and competent individual that may
contribute to a country’s economic progress. This will be made
possible if the education institution has a friendly and
progressive system that is anchored from the policies that are
being implemented through a thorough planning based on the
factual basis or data.
Moreover, policies and planning are just mere
guidelines and legal papers to be implemented by the management
without the leadership in management to implement plans and
policies and the teachers who will administer the implementation
of plans and policies it will remain as a plan and policy.
Therefore, action must be taken seriously will good leadership
and management.
