CHAPTER 3

The Elements and Principles of Design

Intended Learning Outcome:

By the end of this chapter, you must be able to:
1. Explain the elements of Art.
2. Explain the principles of design.
3. Analyze artworks applying the elements and principles of design.

Background Information:

Vocabulary of Art Elements

Line The edges of a form. Lines can be drawn in a variety of directions with many kinds of tools. Sometimes,
lines are used to express spatial illusions or the artist’s feelings.

Shape The contour of a form or mass, whether a real, imaginary, or abstract object. Shapes come in different
proportions and sizes, in two and three dimensions. Sometimes, shapes create tension by their
proximity; they can also be overlapped.

Value The amount of light or dark seen on an object or in a color. Value can establish mood, flow, direction,
and form.

Space The interval of distance between you and the objects in your environment. Where you exist in space
determines your point of view. Shapes, colors, sizes, patterns, and line direction all change as you
move within the space because all objects in space have a position and direction relative to each other.
Within an artwork, pace is determined by placement on the picture plane (near or far) and is created by
color, value, and shape.

Color A visual sensation derived from pigment or light. Color has hue, value, and intensity, can be transparent
or opaque, and is related to colors around it. Color sometimes has symbolic meaning or expresses
moods.

Pattern formed by intervals of repeated lines, shapes, colors, or textures. Nature is repetitious with pattern.
Pattern is also found on human-made objects, such as textiles and pottery, as well as in music, dance,
and poetry. Pattern can introduce order and unity, or contrast and variety.

Texture The illusion of an artwork’s surface quality. It can be touched (tactile) and seen (visual), may be
natural or synthetic. Line and color can simulate texture.
