Question One
a (i) List with examples, the components of a process model.
(ii) Give the required data for digital simulation using Fortran programming language
(iii) Mention, with examples, six executable and non-executable Fortran statements.
b. A cylindrical water tank (Figure Q2), 2 m diameter and 5 m high, has a square root
resistance in its outflow line such that when water level is 4 m. the outflow rate is 1
m3/min. Develop the model for this system and write the Fortran listing for the initial
values applicable here.

Question Two
A transesterification reaction takes place in a perfectly stirred biodiesel reactor in which fatty
oil (𝐴) is converted into ester molecules (𝐵). The non-isothermal (endothermic) reaction is
assumed to be first order with respect to A. The heat of reaction is α kJ/(kg A reacted) and the
reaction stoichiometry is given as 𝐴 → 3𝐵. The required heat is provided by means of turbulent
hot thermal fluid flow through the constant volume jacket around the reactor (see Figure Q3).
The jacket’s wall has negligible heat dynamics. Using the usual symbols, derive the equation(s)
which describe(s) the system. State all assumptions made.

Question Three
(a) Present the flow chart for a typical process model development
(b) A cone-shaped tank, which serves as liquid stream stabilisation unit in a plant, has
maximum radius (R) and height (H) of 2.5 and 10 m respectively. The tank has an inflow
(F0, m3/min) and outflow (F, m3/min) lines. It has a square root resistance in its outflow line
such that when the liquid level (h) is 4 m, with corresponding radius (r), the outflow (F) is
1 m3/min. Develop the model for this system.
