1 MUSICAL PLAY

What I Need To Know

At the end of this module you are expected to:

 Present an excerpt from a 20th or 21st century Philippine musical and

highlight its similarities and differences to other western musical play.

What’s In

On modules 1 & 2, you have learned about opera and Philippine ballet. Opera
is both an art form and musical form. The singers & musicians perform dramatic
work combining text (libretto) & music usually in an elaborate theatrical setting.
Filipino ballets vividly present folktales based on local fables. Highly communicative
movements & steps dramatize the actions in the respective stories. The colorful sets
& costumes add to the glitter & attraction of the production.

What’s New

Have you ever been to a musical play? Great! It’s fun and enjoying right? We
will now continue our adventure on musical play. Musical have been a popular
choice for theatre goers for over a century. Musical performers need to be able to
sing, dance and act to be able to draw their audience into their story or stage show.
The score needs to be entertaining and contain projecting elements which help to
develop the characters. In today’s generation, musical play has been patronized
because of the number of different types of story and genre of music represented.

What Is It

What is a musical play?

2
- Also called musical comedy, musical theatre, or musical. A play in which
music is usually in the form of songs, is essential to the narrative. (Oxford University
Press, 2010).

- Is a form of theatre combining music, songs, spoken dialog, and dance. The
varied emotional aspects of the production – humor, pathos, love, anger – as well as
the story itself, are communicated through the words, music, dance, and staging of
the entertainment as an integrated whole. (New World Encyclopedia)

Different Types of Musical Play

a. Book Musical

A Book Musical is defined as performance where musical numbers and

dances are fully integrated into a proper narrative with defined dramatic goals.
A book musical is normally made up of three major elements; music, lyrics
and script (book). In the majority of cases, the script or story is created first,
and then the score (music and lyrics) is created afterwards as a way of
developing the characters and furthering the narrative.

a. Jukebox Musical

A Jukebox is a musical whilst is created using pre-existing songs.

These songs are put together to create a story. The songs may all be by the
same artist or group, but a jukebox musical can also be created by blending
music by different artists. The songs can be sung in their original state;
however the lyrics or the music can be adapted slightly to make them fit in
better with the story.

Examples: We Will Rock You (ft. the songs of Queen) and Mamma Mia
(ft. the songs of Abba). Although jukebox musicals can portray a completely
original story, they can also be used in a documentary style. In these cases,
they may help to portray the stories of the original artists.

b. Revue

Revue is a type of musical theatre which combines singing, dancing,

music and sketches. The contents of a revue are normally linked together by
a common theme.

Although a revue can have a story line, this usually weak and is
normally considered to be secondary to the content of individual pieces and
performances within the revue. Revues are a popular form of entertainment
amongst student drama societies, because they allow members to have the
chance to showcase an array of different talents.

Examples: Side by Side (Music and Lyrics of Stephen Sondheim) and

Tom Foolery (the works of Tom Lehrer). The society may decide on a loose
theme and ask members to contribute to the show using their own

3
interpretation of that theme. Revues may also be staged by particular
composers or performers to showcase their own work.

c. Concept Musicals

A concept musical is a musical where a theme, metaphor or concept is

just an important as the overarching plot and the featured songs. The concept
musical became particularly popular during the 1960’s when the directors and
playwrights sought to throw traditional theatrical structures out in favour of
experimentation and freedom of expression.

Directors and playwrights will often use their concept to make some
sort of social commentary. Some critics argue that it is harder for concept
musicals to find commercial success, because the concept of theme may not
always be clear-cut. This means that the content is often more divisive than
that of traditional musicals. Examples: Allegro, Cabaret and Avenue Q

d. Rock Musical / Rock Opera

Rock musicals or rock operas are productions which use more modern
styles of music to tell a story. Although the music is usually original for the
production, it may be influenced by or written by famous rock musicians.
Tommy by The Who is a prominent example of a rock musical which was
created by rock musicians.

Spring Awakening is an example of a modern rock musical which has

been created to tell pre-existing story. The rock music themes have been
cleverly used in this musical to help portray the emotional angst which is
being experienced by the main characters in the piece. The used of rock-style
tunes also helps to make an 18th Century story seem more relatable to
modern day audiences.

Aspects / Characteristics of a Musical Play

1. The Production

Musical theatre productions usually include scores, songs with lyrics that
advance the plot. The musical and songs heighten the tension within the
plot. The emotions or plans of characters are expressed through songs as
well as monologues.

2. Choreography

Drama routines are integral aspect of musical theatre. Choreographed

drama or movement adds physical rhythm to accompany the score.

4
3. Plot and Dialogue

Songs are the main emphasis of musicals. The dialogue in musical is

usually brief and functional drives the main narrative forward until the final
act.

4. Set and Lighting

Modern high-tech equipment creating spectacular stage sets and lighting

have been used in top-end musicals like Broadway and West End.

5. Sound Equipment

It refers to devices that reproduce record and / or process sound.

Examples: microphones, Amplifiers, Loud Speaker

2 Broadway Musicals

What I Need To Know

At the end of this module you are expected to:

 Describe how an idea or story in a musical play is presented in a live

performance/music video.

What’s In
On lesson 1, you learned about musical play or also called musical
comedy, musical theatre, or musical. A play in which music is usually in the form
of songs, is essential to the narrative (Oxford University Press, 2010). It is a form
of theatre combining music, songs, spoken dialog, and dance. The varied

There are also different types of musical play such as: Book Musical,
Jukebox, Revue, Concept musical and Rock musicals. A musical play consists
with characteristics or aspects like production, choreography, plot / dialogue, set
& lighting, and sound equipment.

What’s New

Have you ever been to a Broadway musical play? Have you experience doing
a musical play? How was it? Great! It’s fun and enjoying right? We will now continue
our adventure on musical play. You have learned about Musical plays on the
previous lesson which have been associated with the Broadway plays of New York
City and West End Productions in London. Module 2 has a lot more to offer. You are
about to explore more on musical plays.

10
What Is It

Broadway Musicals

The first major Broadway musical was Showboat, which featured the popular
mode of transport in the American frontier. Since then, musicals have presented
other themes: Siamese royalty in The King and I, English aristocracy in My Fair
Lady, Austrian history in The Sound of Music, medieval English tragedy in Camelot,
and interracial gang rivalry and romance in the West side story. Many Broadway
musicals were also made into films.
Broadway musicals are
family entertainment with themes
and texts which are generally
light and easy to understand. These
may include the problems of everyday
life, such as love and romance, social Scenes from Westside story
acceptance, jealousy and intrigue, and
adventure. The singing is usually amplified,
unlike the operatic quality of classically trained
voices.

Thus, many songs from Broadway

Musicals have become popular hits and some
have achieved semi-classical status because
of their sustained popularity. Among these are Scene from the Sound of Music
Climb Every Mountain from Sound of Music, I Could Have Danced All Night from My
Fair Lady, If I Loved You from Carousel, If Ever I Would Leave You from Camelot,
Some Enchanted Evening from South Pacific, and Sun Moon from Miss Saigon.
These are also widely used for local and school productions because of their
popularity, appeal, and generally less demanding style of singing and acting.

A number of other musicals were adaptations of classical operas. Among

these were Miss Saigon based on Puccini’s Madame Butterfly and Aida from Verdi’s
opera with the same title. While with the advent of technology, modern productions
like The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, Beauty and the Beast, and Lion
King have enthralled audiences with amazing set designs, elaborate costumes, and
computer-generated visual and sound effects.

Lea Salonga on Broadway

One Filipino artist who attained

international status on both London’s
West End and Broadway is Lea Salonga.
She is best known for her portrayal of Kim
in the musical Miss Saigon, a role for which
she won the prestigious Tony Award for
theater in the USA and the Laurence Olivier
Award in London. Lea Salonga in Miss Saigon

11
Lea also garnered the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for the
same role in the USA. Salonga is the first Filipina to have won various international
awards for a single role. Miss Saigon is a musical by Claude-Michel Schönberg and
Alain Boublil, with lyrics by Richard Maltby, Jr. It is a modern adaptation of Giacomo
Puccini’s opera Madame Butterfly, which also tells the tragic tale of a doomed
romance wherein an Asian woman is abandoned by her Caucasian lover. The
setting of the plot is relocated to the 1970s’ Saigon during the Vietnam War, with
Madame Butterfly’s love story between an American Lieutenant and a Japanese
geisha modified into a romance between an American soldier and a Vietnamese bar
girl.

Miss Saigon first opened at West End in London in 1989 and closed in 1994.
The London production became one of the Theatre Royal’s (Drury Lane) longest
running musicals. Thereafter, it was successfully produced in many cities around the
world. The USA production opened at the Broadway Theatre in New York on April
11, 1991 and closed on January 28, 2001 after 4,092 performances. It was again re-
staged in London in 2014 with a different cast.

Following Miss Saigon, Salonga was the first Asian to play the role of Eponine
in the musical Les Misérables, based on the novel of the same title written in 1862 by
the French author Victor Hugo. She also played the role of Mei-Li in Flower Drum
Song.

The Phantom of the Opera

The Phantom of the Opera is a broadway

musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Richard
Stilgoe, with lyrics by Charles Hart and music by
Lloyd Webber. It is based on the novel The Phantom
of the Opera by Gaston Leroux.

The story focuses on a beautiful singer Christine Daaé as she is seduced by a

mysterious disfigured musical genius known as The Phantom of the Opera. The
Phantom lives beneath the Paris Opera House and terrorizes those who work there.
He demands that Christine be the star of the theater’s productions. When the young
singer rejects the Phantom’s advances and her lover Raoul intervenes, the Phantom
sets no limits in his pursuit of revenge and of Christine’s love. However, Christine
escapes with Raoul to the roof, where she tells him about her subterranean
rendezvous with the Phantom. Raoul is skeptical but swears to love and to protect
her always, as demonstrated in their song All I Ask of You.

The Phantom of the Opera is one of the longest-running Broadway musicals

of all time. At the 1988 Tony Awards, the Broadway production was nominated for 11
awards and won seven, including the Best Musical award. The musical also won
several awards at the 1988 Drama Desk Awards.

Les Miserables

Les Misérables, known as “Les Mis,” Is a musical composed in 1980 by

French composer Claude-Michel Schönberg with libretto by Alain Boublil. It is based

12
on the novel Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. It is perhaps the most famous of all
French musicals and one of the most famous musicals performed worldwide.

Les Mis tells the story of paroled convict Jean Valjean who, failing attempts to
find work as an honest man, breaks his chains and conceals his identity in order to
live his life again. Other characters in the musical include the police inspector Javert,
who becomes obsessed with finding Valjean; Fantine, the single mother of Cosette,
who is forced to become a prostitute to support her daughter; Marius, a French
student who falls in love with Valjean’s adopted daughter, Cosette; Eponine, the
young daughter of the Thénardiers who falls in love with Marius; the Thénardiers,
who own an inn; and Enjolras and other students, who are working toward freeing
the oppressed lower class of France.

The musical opened in September 1980 at the Palais des Sports in Paris. The
first English production, produced by Mackintosh and directed by Trevor Nunn,
opened on October 8, 1985 at the Barbican Arts Centre in London. The Broadway
production opened on March 12, 1987 and was nominated for 12 Tony Awards,
winning eight, including “Best Musical” and “Best Original Score,” and ran until 2003.

On October 8, 2006, the show celebrated its 21st anniversary and became
the longest running West End musical in history and is still running (though it has
changed venues). Its Tony award-winning score includes the songs I Dreamed a
Dream, Do You Hear the People Sing?, One Day More, Empty Chairs at Empty
Tables, Master of the House, and On My Own.

audience. Music has also a certain degree of emotions brought into the inner

20
workings of the performers and experienced them on a deeper level. On the other
hand, visual aspects in theatre are considered to be impressive since it includes the
relationship of the actors during the performance. It also involves the stage setting
and design, lights, props and costumes of the characters.

6. SCRIPT
