Tutorial Sheet-3
Topics: Chapter 4.6 to 4.10

1. Suppose the vector space V = P2 : the set of all polynomials of degree less than or
equal to 2. Find the transition matrix PB→C , where the B and C are two basis for V
given by B = {−4 + x − 6x2 , 6 + 2x2 , −6 − 2x + 4x2 } and C = {1 − x + 3x2 , 2, 3 + x2 }.

2. Suppose
 
1 0 0
P = 0 3 2 
0 1 1
is the transition matrix from a basis B to the basis {(1, 1, 1), (1, 1, 0), (1, 0, 0)} for R3 .
Find the basis vectors of B.

3. Find a basis for the null space of A, where

vectors from A.

5. Suppose taht B and C are ordered bases for a nontrivial n-dimensional vector space V
and let P be an n × n matrix. Then prove that P is the transition matrix from B to C
if and only if for every v belongs to V, P [v]B = [v]C .

10. Use matrix multiplication to find the following:

(a) dilation of (−1, 2) with factor k = 3. (b) contraction of (2, −1, 3) with factor
k = 1/4. (c) the image of the vector (3, −4) when it is rotated about the origin
through an angle θ = π/4. (d) the image of the vector (2, −1, 2) if it is rotated π/4
