ENAC 211

Major Assignment 2: School Contexts

Assignment
20 marks

At the end of Study Unit 3 of ENAC 211, students – in groups of 3 – should be able to compare and
contrast – in a paragraph of 250–300 words – the contexts of their 2023 T-PRAC schools – the group
members may NOT be from the same school. The group needs to reflect on their T-PRAC schools –
guiding questions are provided below. Major Assignment 2 should be attainable as the students would
have received guiding questions and a voice-over PPP; they also have experience regarding their T-
PRAC schools to provide the necessary information. Major Assignment 2 is relevant since the students
will become better familiar with the context of a school (i.e., outer disc of the Lesson Wheel).
Additionally, Major Assignment 2 will allow students to work collaboratively in a group. Major
Assignment 2 will be assessed by a lecturer using a rubric.

Instructions:

● Step 1: This is a group assignment – in other words, 3 students per group.

o Take note: Students who submit individually or in pairs will be penalised with 20% or
15% respectively. Thus, form groups of 3 as soon as possible – it may be the same
group as Major Assignment 1, but you are also allowed to search for new members.
Any emails regarding the request to submit individually or in pairs will be ignored. Dr
Uys has created a WhatsApp group that all ENAC 211 students may join freely to find
group members. Since the entire ENAC 211 module is online, students are permitted
to work across campuses.

● Step 2: Ensure that you have studied the section on the Outer Context (i.e., SU3, Chapter 3,
and Chapter 5), and completed all the activities before attempting this assignment.

● Step 3: Consult the following guiding questions when you compare and contrast the three
schools’ contexts:
o What is the name and type of the school, and where is it situated? What resources
are available at the school? What is the socio-economic situation of this school?

o Who are your learners regarding age, race, sex, culture, language, etc.?

o Do they speak English as a first-, second-, third-, fourth-, etc., language? What are
their particular strengths and weaknesses regarding English? What prior knowledge
of English do they bring to the classroom? How proficient are they in English (i.e., BICS
and CALP)? – “Good” or “Bad” are not good enough answers. Elaborate!

o What are their interests regarding sports, academia, arts, etc.?

o What are their favourite television programmes, games, movies, books, music, etc.?

o How familiar are they with technology (e.g., computers, GPS, cell phones, PPPs, etc.)?

● Step 4: Write your paragraph. Keep to the word limit of 200–250 words.

o Take note: If you are 10–15 words over or below the limit, you will be penalised with
10%. If you are 16–25 words over or below the limit, you will be penalised with 15%.
If you are 26–35 words over or below the limit, you will be penalised with 20%. If you
are more than 35 words over or below the limit, you will be penalised with 25%.

● Step 5: Submit your paragraph on eFundi under “Assignments”.

o Take note: Only ONE member should submit the paragraph. If more than one member
per group submits the paragraph, you will be penalised with 5%.

o Take note: Submit your assignment ONLY in a Word document. If you submit a PDF
document, or you submit both a Word and PDF document, you will be penalised with
15%.

o Take note: No late assignments will be accepted via email or Drop Box – the due date
is 7 April (a Sunday). More than enough time has been given for the group to
successfully submit their paragraph on eFundi under “Assignments”.
Warning: If any plagiarism, AI, and/or tampering with the information is detected in your assignment,
you will be reported on AI-SOP AIITSA. When found guilty, you will receive a warning that reflects
permanently on your academic record, a 0 for the assignment, and an additional eFundi course that
needs to be completed within a week.

DO NOT ASK AI TO DO THE COMPARISON AND CONTRASTING FOR YOU!

You have been warned.

● The following rubric will be used by your assigned lecturer:
