Module 1

 Digital Literacy- involves having a current knowledge and


understanding of computers, mobile devices, the web, and
related technologies.
 Computer -is an electronic device, operating under the control
of instructions stored in its own memory.

A collection of related instructions organized for a common purpose is


referred to as software or programs.
 Personal Computer -one popular category, a computer that
can perform all of its input, processing, output, and storage
activities by itself and is intended to be used by one person at a
time.
Types of Personal Computer:
 Laptops
 Tablets
 Desktops
 All-in-one

 Mobile computer- is a portable personal computer, designed


so that a user can carry it from place to place.
 Server- is a computer dedicated to providing one or more
services to other computers or devices on a network.
 Network – is a collection of computers and devices connected
together often wirelessly.
 Mobile device – is a computing device small enough to hold in
your hand. Because of their reduced size, the screens on mobile
devices are small – often between 3-5 inches.
 Smartphone – is an Internet-capable phone that usually
includes a calendar, an address book, a calculator, a notepad,
games, and several other apps.
Four popular types of messages that you send with
smartphones includes:
Voice mail message – a short audio recording sent to or from a
smartphone or other mobile device.
Text message – a short note, typically fewer than 300 characters,
sent to from a smartphone or other mobile device.
Picture message – a photo or other image sometimes along with
sound and text, sent to or from a smartphones or other mobile
phones
Video message – a short video clip, usually about 30seconds, sent
to or from a smartphone or other mobile phones.
Digital Camera – is a device that allows you to take photos and
store the photographed images digitally.
Portable Media Player – is a mobile device on which you can store,
organize, and play or view digital media.
Digital Media Player or Streaming Media Player– is a device,
typically used in a home, that streams digital media from a computer
or network to a television, projector, or some other entertainment
device.
E-book reader or E-reader – is a mobile device that is used
primarily for reading e-books
E-book or digital book – is an electronic version of a printed book,
readable on computers and other digital devices.
Wearable device or wearable is a small, mobile computing
consumer device designed to be worn.
Activity trackers monitor heart rate, measure pulse, count steps
and track sleep patterns.
Smartwatches can communicate with a smartphone to make and
answer phone calls, read and send messages, access the web, play
music, work with apps such as fitness trackers, GPS and more.

Game console – is a mobile computing device designed for single-


player or multiplayer video games.

Data – is a collection of unprocessed items, which can include text,


numbers, images, audio, and video.
Information – conveys meaning to users.
Input Device – is any hardware component that allows you to enter
data and instructions into a computer or mobile device.
Types of Input Device:

 Keyboards
 Mouse
 Touchpad
 Microphone
 Webcam
 Scanner

Output device – is any hardware components that conveys


information from a computer or mobile device to one or more people
Types of Output Device:

 Printers
 Speakers
 Earbuds
 Headphones
 Memory consists of electronic components that store
instructions waiting to be executed and the data needed by
those instructions.
 Storage holds data, instructions and information for future use.
 Storage device – records (writes) and/or retrieves (reads)
items to and from storage media.
Types of Storage Devices:

 Hard disks- contains one or more inflexible, circular platters


 Solid-state drives- uses flash memory to store data
 USB Flash Drives- a portable flash memory
 Memory Cards- a removable flash memory
 Optical Discs- storage media that consist of a flat, round,
portable metal disc
 Cloud Storage - is an Internet service that provides remote
storage to computer users.
 Backup – is a duplicate of content on a storage medium that
you can use in case the original is lost, damaged, or destroyed.
The World Wide Web (or Web for short) is a global library of
information available to anyone connected to the Internet.
 Internet – is a worldwide collection of computer network.

People use the Internet for a variety of reasons:
 Communicate
 Research and Access Information
 Shop
 Bank and Invest Online Trading Entertainment
 Share Information
 Download Videos Web Application

Social Networking Web site or online social network-


encourages members to share their interests, ideas, stories, photos,
music, and videos with other registered users
 Software consists of a series of related instructions, organized
for a common purpose that tells the computer what tasks to
perform and how to perform them.
 System Software consists of the programs that control or
maintain the operations of the computer and its devices.
 Operating system (OS) is a widely recognized example of
system software. OS is a set of programs that coordinates all the
activities among computer or mobile device hardware.
 Applications -(or app for short) consists of programs designed
to make sure more productive and/or assist them with personal
tasks. Applications include programs stored on a computer, as
well as those on a mobile deice or delivered to your device over
the Internet.

Types of apps:
 A desktop app
 A web app
 A mobile app

Installing is the process of setting up software to work with the


computer, printer, and other hardware.
A programmer develops software or writes the instructions that
direct the computer to process data into information.

The Internet- is a worldwide collection of networks.


 Originated as ARPANET.
 Originated on September 1969.
 More than 1000 computers on 1984.
