Purlin Design

The document summarizes the design of purlins according to IS:800-2007. Given data such as loads, material properties, and member geometry are listed. Calculations are shown for load factors, bending moments, shear forces, required plastic section modulus, and selection of ISMC200 section for the purlins. Checks are performed to ensure the section meets requirements for plastic classification, shear capacity, bending capacity, interaction, and deflection. Purlin design as per IS:800-2007 : -

Given Data :-
Imposed load = 2.00 kN/m2
Dead laod (Including cladding + insulation) = 0.15 kN/m2
Wind load (Suction) = 0.50 kN/m2
Purlin spacing = 2.00 m
Rafter at a slope = 20.0 degrees Wdz
Span of the portal = 4.0 m Wd
Load factor = 1.50
Partial safety factor (γm0) = 1.10 Wdy
Yield strength of the material (fy) = 250 N/mm2
Modulus of elasticity of steel (E) = 200000 N/mm2

Load calculation :-
Imposed load = (2 x 2) = 4.00 kN/m
Dead laod (Including cladding + insulation = (0.15 x 2) = 0.30 kN/m
Wind load (Suction) = (0.5 x 2) = 1.00 kN/m
Wdz = 0.282 kN/m
Wiz = 3.759 kN/m
Wwz = -1.000 kN/m
Wdy = 0.103 kN/m
Wiy = 1.368 kN/m
Note : Wwy is zero as wind pressure is perpendicular to the surface on which it acts.Normal to rafter

Factored load calculation :-

Z-direction : -
Wind load (WL) + Dead load (DL) + Live load (LL) = (1.2 x 1) + (1.2 x 0.282) + (1.2 x 3.759) = 6.05 kN/m
Dead load (DL) + Live load (LL) = (1.5 x 0.282) + (1.5 x 3.759) = 6.06 kN/m
Y-direction : -
Dead load (DL) + Live load (LL) = (1.5 x 0.103) + (1.5 x 1.369) = 2.21 kN/m

Bending moment and shear force calculation :-

Bending moment (Mz) = (6.07 x 4^2) / 8 = 12.12 kN.m
Bending moment (My) = (2.21 x 4^2) / 8 = 4.41 kN.m
Shear force (Fz) = (6.07 x 4) / 2 = 12.12 kN
Shear force (Fy) = (2.21 x 4) / 2 = 4.41 kN

Selection on section (purlin section) :-

Plastic section modulus required (Zpz)req = ((Mz x γm0) / fy) + (2.5 x (h / b)) + ((My x γm0) / fy)
(Zpz)req = ((Mz x γm0) / fy) + (2.5 x (h / b)) + ((My x γm0) / fy) = 182757.4 mm3
Using section = ISMC200
Self weight of the beam = 2.21 kN/m
Overall depth of section (h) = 200.0 mm
Width of section (b) = 75.0 mm
Thickness of flange (tf) = 11.4 mm
Thickness of web (tw) = 6.1 mm
Root radius (R ) = 11.0 mm
Height of web (d) = 155.2 mm
Moment of inertia about major axis (Izz) = 18300000 mm4
Moment of inertia about minor axis (Iyy) = 1410000 mm4
Elastic section modulus (Zez) = 181700 mm3
Elastic section modulus (Zey) = 26300 mm3
Plastic section modulus (Zpz) = 211250 mm3

Plastic section modulus (Zpy) = 40416 mm 3

Section Classification :-

Yield stress ratio (ε) = (250 / fy)0.5 = 1.00

Oustanding element of compression flange (b / tf) = (75 / 11.4) = 6.58 < 9.40ε (Refer Table No.2 of
Web with neautral axis at mid section (d / tw) = (155.2 / 6.1) = 25.44 < 42ε IS:800-2007)

Hence the section is plastic

V ≤ Vd
Design shear strength (Vd) = (Vn / γm0) = (fy / (γm0 x √3)) x h x tw
Vn = Vp
Vp = ((Av x fyw) / √3)
Where : -
V = Calculated design force (kN)
Vd = Design shear strength (kN)
Vn = Nominal shear strength (kN)
Av = Shear area (mm2)
fyw = Yield strength of the web (N/mm2)
Z-direction : -
Design shear strength (Vd) = (fy / (γm0 x √3)) x h x tw = 160.1 kN > 12.12 kN Hence Safe

(0.6 x Vd) = 96.1 kN > 12.12 kN Hence Safe

Y-direction : -
Design shear strength (Vd) = (fy / (γm0 x √3)) x 2 x b x tf = 224.4 kN > 4.41 kN Hence Safe

(0.6 x Vd) = 134.6 kN > 4.41 kN Hence Safe

Check for the design capacity of the section (Z-direction) :-
Design capacity of the section (Mdz) = (Zpz x fy) / γm0) ≤ ((1.2 x Zez x fy) / γm0)
Design capacity of the section (Mdz) = (Zpz x fy) / γm0) = 48.01 kN.m
((1.2 x Zez x fy) / γm0) = 49.55 kN.m > 12.12 kN.m Hence Safe

Hence the design capacity of the member is more than maximum bending moment

Check for the design capacity of the section (Y-direction) :-

Design capacity of the section (Mdy) = (Zpy x fy) / γm0) ≤ ((1.2 x Zey x fy) / γm0)
Design capacity of the section (Mdy) = (Zpy x fy) / γm0) = 9.19 kN.m
((1.2 x Zey x fy) / γm0) = 7.17 kN.m > 4.41 kN.m Hence Safe

Hence the design capacity of the member is more than maximum bending moment

Overall member strength (local capacity) :-

The following interaction equation should be satisfied to ascertain the overall member strength.
(Mz / Mdz) + (My / Mdy) ≤ 1.0
(12.13 / 48.02) + (4.42 / 9.19) = 0.73 < 1.0

Hence provided section of purlin is safe

Check for deflection :-

Deflection which is a serviceability limit state must be calculated on the basis of the unfactored imposed loading.
Calculated deflection (∆) = (5 x w x l4) / (384 x E x Iz) = 3.42 mm
Allowable maximum deflection (∆)max = (l / 180 ) = 22.22 mm

Hence the deflection less than allowable maximum deflection
