Part 04 Eurocode 0 Loading Tutorial

This document summarizes a video tutorial on loading combinations in Eurocode 3 (EC3) steel design. It provides an example of calculating equivalent horizontal forces (EHF) for a simple braced structure under different load combinations specified in EC3, including the use of expressions 6.10a and 6.10b. The example considers permanent, imposed, and wind loads, and calculates the EHF for each combination, demonstrating that the controlling combination may change based on the leading variable action. It recommends checking all possible combinations but notes that expression 6.10 provides a conservative solution.

Example 2
The use of expressions 6.10a and 6.10b is demonstrated in Figure 1
for a very simple bracing system shown with its unfactored vertical
and wind loads. The equivalent horizontal forces (EHF) must be
calculated for each combination, because they depend on the design
(factored) vertical loads and will be simply taken as 1/200 of the total
vertical load.

= 1/200 of total vertical load

Example 2
Solution:

The design must be based on the most onerous of expressions of

6.10a and 6.10 b.

Using expression 6.10a:

 G Gk +  Q ,1 0,1Qk ,1 +  Q ,2 0,2Qk ,2 =
1.35  400 + 1.5  0.7  600 + 1.5  0.5  120

1170 kN 90 kN
Permanent + Imposed floor loading Wind loading

EHF = Total vertical load/200 = (1170+1170)/200 = 11.7 kN

Example 2
Using expression 6.10b, taking imposed floor load as the leading
variable action :

Leading variable action Accompanying variable action

 G Gk +  Q ,1Qk ,1 +  Q ,2 0,2Qk ,2 =

0.925  1.35  400 + 1.5  600 + 1.5  0.5  120

1400 kN 90 kN
Permanent + Imposed floor loading Wind loading

EHF = Total vertical load/200 = (1400+1400)/200 = 14 kN

Example 2
Now this time, using expression 6.10b, taking wind load as the
leading variable action :

Leading variable action Accompanying variable action

 G Gk +  Q ,1Qk ,1 +  Q ,2 0,2Qk ,2 =

0.925  1.35  400 + 1.5  120 + 1.5  0.7  600

500 kN 180 kN 630 kN

Permanent load wind load Imposed floor load

Permanent + imposed floor load = 500 + 630 =1130 kN

EHF = Total vertical load/200 = (1130+1130)/200 = 11.3 kN Figure 4: Design values, 6.10b

• In general, all possible design combinations of actions must be

checked.

• For designers, the simplest solution is to use expression 6.10, which

will be conservative.

• If more economy is required, the use of expressions 6.10a and 6.10b

will be beneficial.
