Rationale

The services of guidance and counseling help students make decisions about

their personal and academic lives. These services are helpful in helping people realize

who they are and set goals for the future in order to achieve excellence and appropriate

adjustment in the institution and in society. (Parbin Sultana Rahman, Subhana Azmi

2023) Students encounter numerous obstacles during their schooling, and occasionally

they are unable to overcome these obstacles in a way that will allow them to be solved.

This is often the result of inadequate guidance. Pupils deal with issues related to

performance, topic selection, academic performance, peer and teacher relationships, and

competition. But owing to loss of sufficient guidance they acquire maladjustments. Then

how can we create a balanced future with them, if they cannot develop a balanced

personality. Teenagers therefore require advice and counseling in order to deal with

issues and manage their lives and careers successfully. This essay aims to examine the

value of guidance and counseling services in high school education and offers some

corrective recommendations for their implementation. Ten high schools were chosen for

the study with the aid of cluster sampling techniques, and information was gathered from

students in the ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades. 30 teachers were chosen to

gather the data, and 60 pupils were chosen as a sample. Students' quantitative and

qualitative responses to a questionnaire about the value of school guidance and

counseling services were gathered, as well as information from the school teacher.
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Concept of Guidance

According to Jones (2015) there are various definitions of the term “guidance”. It is

necessary to consider the ideas of different authors concerning the nature of the subject

matter in order to grasp its full meaning. From a layman’s point of view, guidance

attracts a barrage of meanings. For instance, guidance simply means to guide, to direct, to

steer, to lead, to pilot, to assist, etc. From the foregoing, parents and other lay persons

basically view the counsellor as one who directs or steers children into a particular

endeavour. In order to gain more insight into the nature of the term, various definitions

by some authorities will be examined. states that guidance involves personal help given

by a competent person; it is designed to assist a person to decide where he wants to go,

what he wants to do or how he can best accomplish his purpose; it assists him to solve

problems that arise in his life. It does not solve problems for the individual helps him to

solve them. The focus of guidance is the individual and not the problem; its purpose is to

promote the growth of the individual in self-direction.

According to Khan (2019) stated that guidance refers to advice or information provided

by a person of experience to solve a problem or improve something. Guidance refers to

the process of helping individuals to discover and develop their potentials. The need for

guidance is something that cannot be ignored by anyone. Furthermore, guidance helps in

the development of educational, vocational, and psychological skills in an individual.

Most noteworthy, guidance would help an individual to achieve an optimal level of

happiness and peace in life. Moreover, an individual who receives proper guidance would

surely contribute significantly to society.

Guidance and counselling services

According to Muzumara, Simon (2022) the purpose of the study was to investigate the

relationship between guidance and counselling services offered and learners‟ academic

performance in selected secondary schools in Kabwe, Zambia. The study was under taken

because learners‟ academic performance in secondary schools in Kabwe, Zambia had not

been very good, despite guidance and counselling being offered to them. A survey design

supported by use of quantitative and qualitative techniques were used to collect data for

the study. The sample size for the study was 120; this comprised 100 learners, 10 Head

teachers and 10 guidance teachers. Simple random sampling was used to select learners,

while purposive sampling was used to select Guidance teachers and Head teachers.

Primary data were collected by the use of questionnaires and interview schedules;

secondary data were collected through extensive review of literature related to the study.

Thematic analysis was used to analyze qualitative data while quantitative data were

analyzed using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). The study revealed that

there was a relationship between guidance and counselling services offered and learners‟

academic performance, though the relationship in the study schools was weak because

the services offered were found to be statistically insignificant to have a positive effect on

the learners‟ academic performance. This was because Guidance teachers experienced

challenges which affected the service delivery of guidance and counselling services.

These ranged from: inadequate time to conduct guidance and counselling; heavy teaching

loads; learners‟ negative attitudes towards guidance and counselling; shortage of

guidance and counselling materials; inadequate and inappropriate counselling services

and finally lack of adequate professional training among guidance teachers. Based on

these findings, the study recommended that the Ministry of Education should come up

with a clear policy that will exempt guidance teachers from having any teaching loads.

The study also recommends that a deliberate policy should be put in place by schools to

orient learners on the benefits of guidance and counselling services. The study further

recommends that the ministry should procure enough guidance and counselling materials

to distribute to all the schools in the country.
