WEEK 4 TASK
(October 2 - 5, 2023)

Exercise 1. Survey of 100 households asked how many cars there were in each
household. The results are given below.

No. of Cars Frequency

0 5
1 70
2 21
3 3
4 1

Calculate the mean number of cars per household.

No. of Cars Frequency No. of Cars x Frequency

0 5 0x5=0
1 70 1 x 70 = 70
2 21 2 x 21 = 42
3 3 3x3=9
4 1 4x1=4
TOTAL 100 125
Total Households Total no. of cars

125
Mean ¿ 100 = 1.25

Exercise 2. Hannah drew this bar chart to show the number of repeated cards she
got when she opened packets of football stickers.
Calculate the mean number of repeats per packet.

No. of Repeats Frequency No. of Repeat s x Frequency

0 6 0x6=0
1 12 1 x 12 = 12
2 9 2 x 9 = 18
3 7 3 x 7 = 21
4 4 4 x 4 = 16
5 2 5 x 2 = 10
6 4 6 x 4 = 24
TOTAL 44 101
Total No. Of Packets Total No. Of Repeats

101
Mean ¿ 44 = 2.295

Exercise 3. A class conduct an experiment in biology. They place a number of 1m by

1m square grids on the playing field and count the number of worms which appear
when they pour water on the ground. The results obtained are given below.

(a) Calculate the mean number of worms.

Total no. of worms 78
Mean = Total no. of square grids ¿
40
= 1.95

(b) How many times was the number of worms seen greater than the mean?

 We get 14+22+21+8+6+7 = 78 by adding or counting the number of

times worms appeared. As a result, the number of worms seen was
greater than the mean, which is 78.
Exercise 4. Here are the weights, in kg, of 30 students.

(a) Copy and complete the frequency table below using a class interval of 10 and
starting at 30.

Weight in Range (w) Tally Frequency

30 <= w < 40 |||| 4
40 <= w < 50 |||| -|| 7
50 <= w < 60 |||| -|| 7
60 <= w < 70 |||| -||| 8
70 <= w < 80 | 1
80 <= w < 90 ||| 3

(b) Which class interval has the highest frequency?

 The class interval 60 <= w < 70 has the highest frequency, i.e. 8.

Exercises

5. The mean height of class of 28 students is 162 cm. A new girl of height 149 cm
joins the class. What is the mean height of the class now?

 Solution:
Total height of class of 28 students = 28 x 162
= 4,536
New Total = 4,536 + 149 = 4,684

4,685
New Mean = 29 = 161.55

6. After 5 matches the mean number of goals scored by a football team per match is
1.8. If they score 3 goals in their 6th match, what is the mean after the 6th match?

 Solution:
Total no. of goals of 5 matches = 5 x 1.8
=9
New Total = 9 + 3 = 12

12
New Mean = 6 =2
7. The mean weight of 25 children in a class is 58 kg. The mean weight of a second
class of 29 children is 62 kg. Find the mean weight of all the children.
Prepared by:

Solution:
 First Class: Second Class:
- Mean weight = 58 kg - Mean weight = 62 kg
- No. of children = 25 - No. of children = 29

(25 x 58) + (29 x 62)

Mean = 25 + 29

1,450 + 1,798
=
54
3,248
=
54
= 60.15 kg
