ii. develops a range of feasible design ideas, using an appropriate
medium(s) and detailed annotation, which can be correctly interpreted by
others.

DESIGN 1-

This design features an earbud case with an adjacent speaker system built into
the case. The case is ovular in shape, with a flat bottom, which serves as an
adequate shape for the speakers for ideal performance while holding the earbuds
as well. The dimensions for the case are (80 x 50 x 50)mm. The speakers are
located at the lower region of the case, with the top opening up to serve as a
holder for the earbuds. The earbuds are of the dimensions (40 x 5 x 3) mm, with
additional holding protectors in the headstock for better grip in the ears. It has a
balanced ratio between earbuds casing and speaker regions.
DESIGN 2-

This design features an earbud case with an adjacent speaker system built into
the case. The case is cuboidal in shape, with a flat bottom, which serves as an
adequate shape for the speakers to perform the best. The dimensions for the
case are (80 x 50 x 50)mm. The speakers are located at the lower region of the
case, with the top opening up to serve as a holder for the earbuds. The earbuds
are of the dimensions (30 x 6 x 4) mm, with a bar design spanning across the
entire ear with additional protectors in the middle for better grip in the ears. It has
a more speaker biased ratio compared to the first design.

DESIGN 3-

This design features an earbud case with an adjacent speaker system built into
the top of the case. The case is cylindrical in shape, with a flat bottom, which
serves as an adequate shape for the storage of earbuds. The dimensions for the
case are (60 dia. x 40)mm. The speakers are located at the upper region of the
case, with the bottom opening up to serve as a holder for the earbuds. The
earbuds are of the dimensions (20 x 5 x 3) mm, with a bean shaped design
sitting comfortably at the ear cavity (Inspiration taken from Samsung Buds Live).
It has a more Earbud case biased ratio compared to the first and second design.
iii. presents the chosen design and justifies fully and critically its selection
with detailed reference to the design specification

Out of all my chosen designs, I shall select Case 1 and Earbud 3 to be my

leading design, due to the fact that they seem to be conveying their task the best
as well as fitting the required criteria for the efficient functioning of both sub-parts
the best. While Cases 2 and 3 as well as Earbuds 1 and 2 did convey their
functions well, a number of reasons such as practicality, usability, and even
aesthetics led me to choose Case 1 and Earbud 3 over Case 2/ 3 and Earbuds 1/
2.

I have selected Case 1, because out of all the designed cases, this case seemed
to be the most apt design in fulfilling its causes. This is due to the reason that
Case 1 has the most balanced ratio between the regions inhibited by the
speakers at the lower regions for optimum sound clarity, as well as balancing out
earbud storage space that allows the functional and practical storage of small
sized earbuds to maximize speaker efficiency, while balancing out earbud
storage space, thus making this design the best choice out of all three designs.
The reason I haven’t selected any of the other three designs is because while
Design 2 provides a better speaker efficient design, it is a very blocky design
which is why I think it will be uncomfortable to carry around. On the other hand,
Case 3 favors the storage of earbuds, which is why I do not think that it will serve
effectively as speakers and will not produce quality sound. Since Case 1 shows
mixed adaptive features of both these designs, Case 1 will be my selected
design.

On the other hand, my choice for the selected earbuds shall be Earbuds number
3. This is due to the fact that Earbud three fulfills all the clauses necessary, and
is the overall highest scoring option out of all the three earbud designs. Earbud
three has a small bean shape, which fits snugly into the ear cavity. This enables
the earbud to be small and handy in size, which also correlates to the fact that its
small size will take up less space in the speaker-case. This will prove effective
due to a number of reasons. The bean shaped earbud shape doesn't stick out of
the ear so it is the most convenient design out of the three in the placement
criteria. Other than that, since it fits snugly into the ear, it prevents ear fatigue
which is why it can be used for long durations. As stated, the primary reason for
not selecting the first 2 designs is due to their comparatively larger size, which
makes them difficult to store while also making space for effective speakers.
Also, from personal experience, I find this design to be much more comfortable
than the other two which is why I will be going for Earbud 3.

outlines requirements for the creation of the chosen solution.

iv) fully justifies changes made to the chosen design and plan when
making the solution.

As I constructed the design, I tried staying as faithful to the original plan as

possible. A few changes were made due to the inadequacy/unavailability of
resources, such as not using a professional CAD software for better designs, or
the limitations of using a beginner CAD software such as TinkerCAD, which only
allow me to use an array of basic shapes.

For instance, for the Earbud Case that I selected, I had to use a ready-made
shape as I couldn’t find the right premade design to use. This also overlaps with
my lack of knowledge as to how to use this software effectively, which is why it
was not entirely possible for me to stick to the design I had planned to make.

On the other hand, while the design for the Earbud was mostly faithful to what I
made, I think I could have made it a bit more detailed, such as creating a more
structured bezel, refining the earplug, etc.

Other than that, I have tried to stay as faithful to the original design as possible.

CRITERION D

i) designs detailed and relevant testing methods, which generate data, to

measure the success of the solution

SELF EVALUATION:
The product I have created was meant to solve the problem of not having to carry
multiple listening devices at once by people who have restrictions of space, time
and budget such as students, office workers etc. As far as the success criteria
goes, I think that this device is pretty effective at helping solve the said problem.
The device solves the problem of acting as 2 devices at once, is small and
portable, and has a user friendly and portable design, which is why I think the
device was effective at solving the said problems.
