A microcomputer is known as a personal computer, like a small computer. Microcomputers

are designed with a microprocessor as well as a single chip that is the CPU (Central
Processing Unit), data memory (RAM, ROM), and I/O buses; these are connected on the
motherboard. In its technical form, the microcomputer is a microcontroller. The main purpose
of microcomputers is to process the tasks and accomplish the basic needs of the people. It is
used in home appliances such as microwaves, TVs, refrigerators, and more.

Types of Microcomputers.

Desktop computer plays the major role in the user’s life

because users can perform several complicated tasks in few
times without getting any hindrance. This computer is
placed on the table, and it is connected to various
components through wires such as keyboard, mouse, and
monitor and system unit. With the help of these components,
users can insert their commands, and get output according to
given input instructions. These computers are capable to link
internet through Wi-Fi or LAN cable. But it has some
drawbacks such as bigger size compares to other Desktop
Microcomputers (Laptops, PDA, Smartphone, and
Notebook). It is not portable because it needs fixed area.

A Gaming Console is an electronic device used with a

display and controls to play video games. Game consoles are
actually very similar to computers, but they are designed
specifically to be part of an entertainment system, which
means they're easy to connect to your TV and stereo. Even
though game consoles can seem to be more basic than
computers, they use the best possible hardware components
for playing games. Compared to a computer, game consoles
are simpler to set up and operate.

An Automotive Navigation System is a computer mapping

tool used to assist drivers in locating their destination. Most
of the time, this amenity comes standard with the vehicle.
However, they can also be installed after being bought
separately. Most importantly, both varieties of automobile
navigation systems are made to attach inside or on top of the
3
dashboard for convenience. So, there is no difference in this regard. Regardless, most of them
combine a satellite link to the Global Positioning System (GPS) with a computerized road
map to show the vehicle's real-time location.

A laptop is a portable microcomputer that has an almost

similar function to desktop computers. Laptops combine all
the important components, such as the CPU, display, RAM,
HDD, battery, mouse (touchpad), and keyboard, in a
single case. Laptops are operated on the basis of charging
the inbuilt battery, so you can take them with you wherever
you go with a full battery. That’s why it has the advantages
of portability, compactness, and being lightweight. Laptops
are very convenient for transportation due to their compact
size. Most of the time, a laptop is transported in a laptop
backpack or briefcase, which allows you not to hold it in
your hands but to hang it on your shoulder. Due to their portability, laptops are very useful
for both students and employees.

PDA is another portable hand-held microcomputer that

stands for ‘Personal Digital Assistant‘. The size of these
devices is small enough to be carried almost everywhere
with broad functionality. PDAs are dependent on the inbuilt
battery. PDAs are generally used domestically. The stylus
pen is used instead of a keyboard to write on the screen.
However, it supports voice and recognizes the touch of
fingers. With this, it also has storage capacity for viewing
images and videos. It has computing and networking
features such as calling and Internet connectivity, as well as
other features like meeting reminders, storing addresses, and
important information that can be consulted at any time and in any place. It had become
common and very useful in certain educational institutions for students to take notes. But
PDAs have lost the boom consistently after the introduction of smartphones, and today, they
are replaced by smartphones. The difference between today’s smartphones and PDAs is
really noticeable, i.e., performance. Modern smartphones perform almost all the functions or
are even more advanced than PDAs. This leads to the failure of PDAs' popularity, but PDAs
still have their users.

Tablet microcomputers are handheld portable devices

with a touch-screen interface, and they are smaller than
notebook devices but bigger than smartphones. which users
can perform both activities (input and output) on its LCD
screen. They are enabled to use Wi-Fi and other cellular
networks for the internet. On the tablet, several applications,
such as word processing and spreadsheets, can be run.
Sometimes, users can get problems due to a lack of a
keyboard, but they can use an external keyboard if more is
needed.

4
Smartphones are another example of portable microcomputers. Today’s latest smartphones
have almost similar capabilities to a computer and many other unique features, from simple
communication to advanced recognition of a person by their fingerprint. A smartphone has a
phone-based operating system such as Android or iOS. The operating system is a complex of
all those applications, which makes an ordinary mobile phone an advanced, versatile
smartphone. It made it possible to organize work with an inbuilt pixel camera, convenient
apps, documents and files, and input/output of data, similar to how a computer does it. The
operating systems are also constantly being improved and updated by manufacturers like
Google, Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, etc. One of the most effective features of all smartphones
is that they allow you to install different applications to increase the possibilities of phones,
such as data processing and connectivity, internet access, and social media access.

A Calculator is an electronic hardware device or software

capable of performing mathematical calculations, such as
addition, multiplication, subtraction, or division. The Casio
Computer Company developed the first electronic
calculator in 1957. Since then, calculators have come in
many sizes and are built into most operating systems on
computers, smartphones, and tablets.

Uses of Microcomputer

 In Home for Personal Usage

Micro computers are used in the home for several purposes such as playing games,
entertainment (listen music, Watching movies).

 In Business
Microcomputers are playing vital role in every sectors of business because due to use
of this computer, massive paperwork has been reduced. Every organization needs
microcomputer to process of massive data such as each bank’s employees use
computer to perform their task in short duration. Other sectors where to use
microcomputer such as graphic design, architecture firms, film studios, and more. It is
used in the retail sector as software, and it reduces headache because it can
manipulate several complex calculation in few time duration like as tax returns,
manage invoices and sort out payroll.

 Medical Sector
Microcomputers are very useful in the medical line to keep all records of all kind of
patients in different areas such as small clinics and hospitals. Several lab technicians
use these computers in many sophisticated equipment like as X-ray machines and
(MRI) magnetic resonance imaging devices.

 Education Sector
Microcomputers are used in the numerous colleges and universities for teaching
students on the projectors. Other computer centers also use several microcomputers
for providing computer education to their students.

5
 Data Center Points
Microcomputers can be used to alter massive computing units in the data centers with
using micro servers because it is able to consume less power and space.

 Mobile Computing Device

Microcomputers are getting more popularity due to use in the mobile computing
devices like as PDA, tablet, palmtop, and Smartphone. These devices can be accessed
anytime and anywhere with wireless network.

 Use as Micro controllers

Micro controllers are enabled with CPU, program memory, and I/O connectors. This
system is used in the embedded applications like as medical and office equipment,
robot, automobile engine control systems, and more.
