Writing is to communicate with others, to stimulate interest or action from the


reader. It also helps you to reflect on your experiences and learn from them. People
write for a variety of reasons. For some, it is a career; for others, a hobby. Some write
because it helps them to sort out their feelings.

In this lessons, you will learn the different types of writing the informative,
journalistic and literary writing. You will distinguish the differences of the three types
of writing. This module will help you learn how to write informative, journalistic
and literary text.

Let’s learn
Writing gives people, the opportunity to express themselves
regardless of whether they are writing journalism, fiction or
other type of genre. Writing, in its essence, is a soul soother.
As the pen hits the page or fingers tap on a keyboard, the
writing is the beginning of personal expression. People write
for a variety of reasons, but mainly writing serves to
provoke change.

Informative
Writing
- educates a reader on a topic. They can have one of
several functions: to define a term, compare and
contrast something, analyze data, or provide a how-
to. They do not, however, present an opinion or try
to persuade your reader.

The primary purpose of informative/explanatory writing is to increase the understanding of


the
reader.

Informative/explanatory writing might include any or all of the foll owing:

-is Writing
a style of writing that is used to report news
stories in a variety of media formats. It is to inform
the public by reporting on local, national and global
news and events.

The purpose of journalism is thus to provide citizens with the information they need
to make the best possible decisions about their lives, their communities, their societies, and

Every news outlet has a different protocol for
selecting which stories to run, but some
traditional values often determine the
“newsworthiness” of a story. The more of these
news values a story satisfies, the more likely
you are to see it prominently featured in mass
media outlets.

Literary
Writing
- is defined as creating new creative
work, such as poems or novels, and
compilations or volumes of creative
work. The term 'literary writing'
calls to mind works by writers such
as Shakespeare, Milton, or
Wordsworth; definitive
examples of all that the term
implies.

• In fundamental terms literature is 'an expression of life


through the medium of language' , but language used
more profoundly than when used simply to convey
information.
• Literature is a vital record of what men have seen in life;
what they have experienced of it, what they have
thought and felt about those aspects of it which have
the most immediate and enduring interest for all of us.
• All fiction is a kind of magic and trickery, a confidence
trick, trying to make people believe something is true
that isn't.
• Literature is a process of communication, it 'helps us to
understand life'.

The literary purpose is used to entertain and to give aesthetic pleasure. The focus of the
literary purpose is on the words themselves and on a conscious and deliberate arrangement of

when using the literary purpose.
