HT12D

The document discusses the HT12D-212 series of decoders. The decoders are capable of decoding information consisting of N address bits and 12-N data bits. They are used in applications like cordless phones, car door controllers, alarm systems, and security systems. The decoders receive encoded data from an encoder, check if the address matches its own address over multiple readings, and decode the data bits if the address matches to activate output pins and signal a valid transmission.

HT12D- 212 SERIES OF DECODERS

INTRODUCTION:

A decoder is a device which does the reverse of an encoder, undoing the encoding so that the original information can be retrieved. The same method used to encode is usually just reversed in order to decode. The 212 decoders are capable of decoding information which consists of N address bits and 12-N data bits. HT12D is one such kind of a decoder. And this IC is used in the following applications: 1. Cordless telephones 2. Car door controllers 3. Smoke and fire alarm system 4. Burglar alarm system 5. Security systems This IC offers Low power and high noise immunity CMOS technology.
ENCODERS AND DECODERS:

In the early days of "radio control", before these coding ICs were available, radio controlled garage doors sometimes opened themselves when they received transmissions from a plane passing overhead or a two-way radio operating in the area. Encoding and decoding is now used in most wireless control systems to prevent this type of interference and to provide security. When using a wireless remote control system it is desirable to have a way of filtering out or ignoring the unwanted signals to prevent false data from being received. One way to accomplish this is to use microprocessors at the transmitter and receiver that are programmed with error detection and correction algorithms

something like those used in modems. A much simpler way is to use an encoder IC at the transmitter and a decoder IC at the receiver. These ICs automatically generate and decode multiple serial codes that must match before data is accepted as valid.

HOLTEK PRODUCTS:

Holtek encoders and decoders are a great choice for low-cost basic remote control applications. These chips can be combined with the LC or LR Series RF modules to create a mixed system of custom data and encoded data. The 212 Series offers 12 bits of address and data in DIP and SMD packages. The 312 Series also offers 12 bits of address and data, but has tri-state address lines, which offer a much larger number of addresses with the same number of pins. The 318 Series has 18 bits of address and data as well as the tri-state addressing.

OPERATION:

The 212 series of decoders provides various combinations of addresses and data pins in different packages so as to pair with the 212 series of encoders. The decoders receive data that are transmitted by an encoder and interpret the first N bits of code period as addresses and the last 12_N bits as data, where N is the address code number. A signal on the DIN pin activates the oscillator, which decodes the incoming address and data. The decoders will then check the received address three times continuously. If the received address codes all match the contents of the decoder local address, the 12_N bits of data are decoded to activate the output pins and the VT pin is set high to indicate a valid transmission. This will last unless the address code is incorrect or no signal is received. The output of the VT pin is high only when the transmission is valid. Otherwise it is always low.
