1.1 INTRODUCTION
A Diesel Loco Shed plays a crucial role in the upkeep and efficient operation of diesel locomotives, which
are an integral part of the Indian Railways network. These sheds are strategically located across the railway
network to ensure timely maintenance and repair of diesel locomotives.

Here's a general introduction to a Diesel Loco Shed:

Purpose: The primary purpose of a Diesel Loco Shed is to provide maintenance, repair, and overhaul
services for diesel locomotives. Locomotives undergo scheduled maintenance, routine inspections, and
necessary repairs to ensure their optimal performance and longevity.

Functions: Maintenance and Overhaul: Diesel

locomotives are taken out of service at regular intervals
for thorough maintenance and overhaul. This includes
checking and repairing various components, such as
the engine, transmission, braking system, and
electrical systems.

Routine Inspections: Regular inspections are

conducted to identify and address any issues before
they escalate. This helps in preventing breakdowns and
ensuring the reliability of locomotives.

Cleaning and Lubrication: Locomotives are cleaned

to remove dirt, grime, and other debris that can
accumulate during operation. Lubrication of essential
components is also part of the maintenance process. Fig.No.1

Component Replacement: Worn-out or damaged components are replaced to maintain the locomotive's
efficiency and safety standards.

Infrastructure: Diesel Loco Sheds are equipped with various facilities, including:-

Workshops: Where maintenance and repairs are carried out.

Testing Facilities: To ensure that overhauled locomotives meet performance standards.
Storage Yards: Where locomotives are parked and stored when not in use.
Administrative Buildings: Housing offices and support staff.

Significance: Diesel Loco Sheds are vital for the efficient operation of diesel locomotives, which are
widely used for hauling freight and passenger trains. Proper maintenance and timely repairs conducted at
these sheds contribute to the overall reliability and safety of the railway system.

1.2 HISTORY OF THE INDIAN RAILWAYS

Indian Railways is the state-owned railway company of India. It comes under the Ministry of Railways. Indian
Railways has one of the largest and busiest rail networks in the world, transporting over 18 million passengers
and more than 2 million tonnes of freight daily. Its revenue is Rs.107.66 billion. It is the world's largest
commercial employer, with more than 1.4 million employees. It operates rail transport on 6,909 stations over
a total route length of more than 63,327 kilometers(39,350 miles). The fleet of Indian railway includes over
200,000 (freight) wagons, 50,000 coaches and 8,000 locomotives. It also owns locomotive and coach
production facilities. It was founded in 1853 under the East India Company.

Fig 1.1 Logo of Indian Railway

Indian Railways is administered by the Railway Board. Indian Railways is divided into 16 zones. Each zone
railway is made up of a certain number of divisions. There are a total of sixty-seven divisions. It also operates
the Kolkata metro. There are six manufacturing plants of the Indian Railways. The total length of track used
by Indian Railways is about 108,805 km

(67,608 mi) while the total route length of the network is 63,465 km (39,435 mi). About 40% of the total track
kilometer is electrified & almost all electrified sections use 25,000 V AC.

Pg. 11
Indian railways uses four rail track gauges :

1. The broad gauge (1670 mm)

2. The meter gauge (1000 mm)
3. Narrow gauge (762 mm)
4. Narrow gauge (610 mm).

Indian Railways operates about 9,000 passenger trains and transports 18 million passengers daily Indian
Railways makes 70% of its revenues and most of its profits from the freight sector, and uses these profits to
cross-subsidies the loss-making passenger sector. The Rajdhani Express and Shatabdi Express are the fastest
trains of India.

ISO Certification Year :

Major and Minor schedules of Diesel Locomotives are carried out in the shed. The shed is ISO 45001 :
2018, ISO 9001 : 2015 and ISO 14001 : 2015 certified.
The shed is divided into Light Schedule Repair section, Heavy Schedule Repair section, Heavy Repair
(Mechanical), Heavy Repair (Electrical), Bogie Section, Machine Shop and Training Centre. The shed is
located at Ghorpuri and entrance of the shed is between a Railway crossing gate.

Highlights :

1. RCD Ghorpuri is having 03 underground storage tank each 225KL capacity

2. All ALCO locomotives except WDS6 (05 nos.) are having MEP (Medha Excitation &
Propulsion) control system.

3. 122 locomotives are having computerized control braking (CCB) system.

4. Electric Locomotive shed construction work is in progress for homing 50 Electric locomotives.
Pg. 13
Presently IA, IB schedule of 05 KYN based Electric locomotives are being carried out at Diesel Loco
Shed, Pune.
5. Zero scrap shed. All scrap/released material is collected at designated place and lot is
formed. When sufficient quantity is collected, lot is auctioned immediately.
6. New high capacity screw compressor has been installed in shed. Refrigerated air dryer is
also provided to give moisture free compressed air.
7. spring testing machine has been installed. This machine is suitable for conducting :
i) Compression test
