Activity 1
Background:
You are a nursing student about to begin your clinical rotation in a psychiatric care facility. Over
the past few weeks, you have been reflecting on your strengths, weaknesses, values, and
personal biases in preparation for this experience.
Scenario:
During your first day of clinical rotation, you are assigned to work with a patient diagnosed with
major depressive disorder. As you engage with the patient, you find yourself feeling
uncomfortable and unsure of how to connect with them. You recognize that you may have
personal biases or misconceptions about mental illness that are influencing your interactions.
Considerations:
Self-awareness: Reflect on your feelings, thoughts, and reactions as you interact with the patient.
What specific aspects of the situation are challenging for you? How do your personal beliefs,
experiences, and cultural background influence your perceptions of mental illness and your
ability to provide empathetic care?
Seeking Support and Feedback: Acknowledge that it is okay to feel uncertain or uncomfortable
in certain situations. How can you proactively seek support from your clinical instructor, peers,
or other members of the healthcare team? What strategies can you use to receive constructive
feedback and guidance to improve your practice?
Cultural Competence: Reflect on the cultural diversity within the patient population and the
impact of cultural beliefs and practices on mental health care. How can you demonstrate cultural
competence and respect for the patient's cultural background and preferences?
