03 Sheet

This document contains 11 questions about digital electronics concepts like serial and parallel data transfer using shift registers. Specifically, it asks about: 1) The difference between serial and parallel transfer, and how to convert between the two using shift registers. 2) The output states of 4-bit and 8-bit parallel out shift registers after several clock pulses, given initial states and serial data inputs. 3) The output states of 4-bit and 5-bit serial in/serial out shift registers after clock pulses, storing given nibbles. 4) The output of a serial in/parallel out shift register after clock pulses, storing a given nibble. 5) Drawing shift register circuit diagrams

Electrical Engineering Department Subject: Digital Electronics

Faculty of Engineering at Shoubra 2st semester, 2013/2014

Banha university Sheet No. 2

1- What is the difference between serial and parallel transfer? Explain how to convert serial
data to parallel and parallel data to serial. What type of register is needed?

2- The bit sequence 0010 is serially entered (right-most bit first) into a 4-bit parallel out shift
right register that is initially clear. What are the Q outputs after two clock pulses?

3- Assume that a 4-bit serial in/serial out shift register is initially clear. We wish to store the
nibble 1100. What will be the 4-bit pattern after the second clock pulse? (Right-most bit
first).

4- A serial in/parallel out, 4-bit shift register initially contains all 1s. The data nibble 0111 is
waiting to enter. What is the register contains after four clock pulses.

5- The bit sequence 10011100 is serially entered (right-most bit first) into an 8-bit parallel out
shift register that is initially clear. What are the Q outputs after four clock pulses?

6- The group of bits 11001 is serially shifted (right-most bit first) into a 5-bit parallel output
shift right register with an initial state 01110. what is the register contains after three clock
pulses.

7- Draw the 5-bit Serial-in/Serial out Shift Register and its states for the data input and clock
waveforms shown in Figure. The register is initially cleared (all 0s).

8- The contents of a 4-bit register are initially 1101. the register is shifted six times to the
right with the serial input being 101101 (right-most bit first). What is the content of the
register after each shift?

9- a) Draw the 4-bit Serial-in/Parallel out Shift Register.

b) Show the states of the 4-bit register (SRG 4) for the data input and clock waveforms
shown in Figure. The register initially contains all 1s.

10- The contents of a 5-bit register are initially 10101. the register is shifted five times to the
lift with the serial input being 10011(right-most bit first). What is the content of the
register after each shift?

11- Draw the 5-bit Parallel-in/Serial out Shift Register and its logic symbol.
