Q.1. Bag A contains 3 white and 2 black balls while bag B contains 2 white and 5 black balls. One of the bags
is chosen at random and a ball is drawn from it. What is the probability that the ball is white? [ISC 2007]
Q.2. An urn contains 10 white and 3 black balls while another urn contains 3 white and 5 black balls. Two balls
are drawn from the first urn and put into the second urn and then a ball is drawn from the second urn. Find the
probability that the ball drawn from the second urn is a white ball. [ISC 2016]
Q.3. An urn contains 2 white and 2 black balls. A ball is drawn at random. If it is white, it is not replaced into
the urn. Otherwise, it is replaced. The process is repeated. Find the probability that the third ball drawn is black.
[ISC 2015]
Q.4. A purse contains 4 silver and 5 copper coins. A second purse contains 3 silver and 7 copper coins. If a coin
is taken out at random from one of the purses, what is the probability that it is a copper coin? [ISC 2011]
Q.5. There are two bags. One bag contains 6 green and 3 red balls. The second bag contains 5 green and 4 red
balls. One ball is transferred from the first bag to the second bag. The one ball is drawn from the second bag.
Find the probability that it is a red ball. [ISC 2010]
Q.6. Bag A contains 5 white and 4 black balls, and bag B contains 7 white and 6 black balls. One ball is drawn
from bag A and without noticing its colour, is put in the bag B. If a ball is then drawn from bag B, find the
probability that it is black in colour. [ISC 2009]
Q.7. If a machine is correctly set up, it produces 90% acceptable items. If it is incorrectly set up, only 40%
items are acceptable. Past experience shows that 80% of the set ups are correctly done. If after a certain set up,
the machine produces 2 acceptable items, find the probability that the machine is correctly set up. [NCERT]
Q.8. An insurance company insured 1500 scooter drivers, 2500 car drivers and 4500 truck drivers. The
probability of a scooter, a car and a truck driver meeting with an accident is 0.01, 0.02 and 0.04 respectively. If
an insured person meets with an accident, then find the probability that he’s a scooter driver. [ISC 2007]
Q.9. For A, B and C, the chances of being selected as the manager of a firm are 4 : 1 : 2 respectively. The
respective probabilities for them to introduce a radical change in marketing strategy are 0.3, 0.8 and 0.5. If the
change does takes place, find the probability that it is due to the appointment of B. [ISC 2013]
Q.10. In a class of 75 students, 15 are above average, 45 are average and the rest below average achievers. The
probability that an above average achieving student fails is 0.005, that an average achieving student fails is 0.05
and the probability of a below average achieving student failing is 0.15. If a student is known to have passed,
what is the probability that he is a below average achiever? [ISC 2012]
Q.11. Box I contains 2 white and 3 black balls. Box II contains 4 white and 1 black ball. Box III contains 3
white and 4 black balls. A dice having 3 red, 2 yellow and 1 green face, is thrown to select the box. If red face

turns up, we pick up box I, if a yellow face turns up we pick up box II, otherwise, we pick up box III. If a white
ball is drawn from the selected box, what is the probability that the dice turned up with a red face? [ISC 2015]
Q.12. The reliability of a HIV test is specified as follows: Of people having HIV, 90% of the tests detect the
disease but 10% go undetected. Of people free of HIV, 99% of the tests are judged negative but 1% are wrongly
diagnosed as HIV +ve. In a city having only 0.1% have HIV, one person is randomly chosen, given the HIV test
and is diagnosed as HIV +ve. What is the probability that the person actually has HIV? [NCERT]
Q.13. A company has two plants to manufacture scooters. Plant I manufactures 80% of the scooters and plant II
manufactures 20%. At plant I, 85 out of 100 scooters are rated as of standard quality and at plant II, 65 out of
100 scooters are rated as of standard quality. A scooter is chosen at random and is found to be of standard
quality. What is the probability that it has come from plant I? [ISC 2006]
Q.14. In a bolt factory, three machines A, B and C manufacture 25%, 35% and 40% of the total production
respectively. Of their respective outputs, 5%, 4% and 2% are defective. A bolt is drawn at random and is found
to be defective. Find the probability that it was manufactured by machine C. [ISC 2014]
Q.15. Three machines A, B and C produce 1500, 2500 and 3000 bulbs respectively. Machine A produces 1.5%
defective bulbs, machine B produces 2% defective bulbs and machine C produces 2.5% defective bulbs. A bulb,
drawn at random, is found to be defective. Find the probability that it was produced by machine B? [ISC 2010]
Q.16. A insurance company insured 4000 doctors, 8000 teachers and 12000 engineers. The probability of a
doctor, a teacher and an engineer dying before the age of 58 years are 0.01, 0.03 and 0.05 respectively. If one of
the insured person dies before the age of 58 years, find the probability that he is a doctor. [ISC 2009]

next section. On a given day, one of the three persons A, B and C carries out the task. A has 45% chance, B has
35% chance and C has 20% chance of doing the task. The probability that A, B and C will take more time than
the allotted time is , and respectively. If it is found that the time taken is more than the allotted time,
what is the probability that A has done the task? [ISC 2016]
Q.18. Bag A contains 2 white, 1 black and 3 red balls; bag B contains 3 white, 2 black and 4 red balls; bag C
