Assignment 2

The document outlines 7 assignment questions related to fatigue crack analysis and fracture mechanics. The questions involve calculating stress intensity factors and compliance for cracked steel components, determining maximum loads and crack sizes given fracture toughness values, and evaluating the safety of cracked pressure vessels and plates based on stress intensity and yield criteria. Expressions are provided for stress intensity factors of various cracked geometries under tension and bending loads.

Assignment 2

Last date for submission: 6 March 2024

(1) Based on prior experience, the 6mm thick steel bracket shown in figure is prone to develop fatigue
cracks in the area of the fillet as shown. After
performing a series of experiments with simulated
cracks of varying lengths we find that the
compliance is fitted to an equation of the form
v a  −9 m
= 5.6  100 + 20 sin   10 where v,a are in m
P  157  N
and P in N. Determine an expression for KI of this
bracket. Assume plane stress conditions.

(2) A tension member is made of AISI 1045 steel

(Fracture toughness 60 MPa m ). It has a width of
b=120 mm and a thickness of t=12 mm and there is
an edge crack though the full thickness and
extending to a length a=18 mm in the width
direction.
(a) What is the maximum permissible tension load if a safety factor of 3 against brittle fracture is
required?
(b) What is the largest permissible crack length if the tension load is 100 kN and the safety factor of
3 is maintained?
Consider the following data.
a
K =  a F  

a 0.857 + 0.265
F   = 0.265 (1 −  ) + (h / b  1)

b (1 −  )3 / 2

where  =
b
Where b=half width and h=half height.

(3)A structural component in the form of a wide plate is to be fabricated from a steel alloy that has a
plane strain fracture toughness of 77 MPa m1/2 , a yield strength of 1400 MPa and has thickness B =
10 mm. The flaw size resolution limit of the flaw detection apparatus is 40 mm. If the design stress
is one half of the yield stress and the value of f(a/W)=1.0, determine whether or not a critical flaw (at
the center of the plate) for this plate is subject to detection.

(4) Determine the energy release rate using elementary beam theory for the configurations shown
below. Assume h << a and determine corresponding stress intensity factors. Assume plane stress
conditions.
5. The following data were obtained from a series of tests conducted on pre-cracked specimens of
thickness 10 mm.

Crack length Compliance Critical load

a(mm) C x 10-7(m/N) P(kN)
50 1 10
66.7 1.43 8.75
84.2 2.02 7.80
102.7 2.79 7.00
119.5 3.59 6.55

where P is the critical load at crack growth. The load-displacement record for all crack lengths is
linearly elastic up to the critical point. Determine the critical value of the strain energy (i.e., average
critical value) release rate for crack growth. Hint: All loads are critical loads

6. A pressure vessel made of ASTM A517-F steel operates near room temperature and has a wall
thickness of t= 50 mm. A surface crack was found in the vessel wall during an inspection. It has an
approximately semi-elliptical shape with surface length 2c = 40 mm and depth a = 10 mm. The Stress
normal to the crack plane is 300 MPa. What is the safety factor against brittle fracture? Would you
remove the pressure vessel from service? Take KIC = 187 MPa m1/2 and yield stress = 760 MPa for
the material ASTM A517-F steel.

7. A plate of 4336 +V steel contains a semi-elliptical surface flaw, 0.8 mm deep and 2 mm long that
is oriented perpendicular to the design stress direction. Given the
K IC = 72.5 MPa m ,  ys = 1340 MPa and the operating stress = 0.4  ys , determine whether the
plate merits continued service based on the requirement that the operative stress intensity level is
below 0.5 KIC. Assume plane strain conditions. Use the following table if required.
