VERBAL FORMS AND EXPRESSIONS – PHRASAL VERBS

Phrasal Verbs are verbal combinations (verb + preposition/adverb) which somehow change
the meaning of the base verb. For example; the meaning of GET is different from the
meaning of GET UP.

Phrasal Verbs are sometimes followed by objects (thing or person):

turn on the radio wrap up a present call up somebody


object object object

Other Phrasal Verbs are not followed by objects:

get up come back look out

PHRASAL VERBS + OBJECT


Phrasal Verbs that are followed by objects can be either separable or inseparable.

 Separable Phrasal Verbs

Separable Phrasal Verbs are those whose parts can be used together or separated by and
object. If the object is a pronoun, it always goes between the two parts.

Examples:

Try on this blouse. Or Try this blouse on.

Take off those shoes. Or Take those shoes off.

Some separable phrasal verbs are:

Call up → (to telephone)


Why don’t we call up James? Or Why don’t we call James up?

Fill in → (to complete in writing)
Fill in the blanks, please. Or Fill the blanks in, please.

Leave on → (to keep wearing)
I’ll leave on this sweater. Or I’ll leave this sweater on.

Put away → (to store in a safe place)
Tommy, put away your toys! Or Tommy, put your toys away!

Put on → (to dress in)
Lynn is putting on her hat. Or Lynn is putting her hat on.

Take out → (to go out along with)
Let’s take out Mom. Or Let’s take Mom out.

Take off → (to remove)
Don’t take off your glasses. Or Don’t take your glasses off.

Try on → (to put on something to see if it fits)

Turn on/off → (to start/stop the operation of something)
Please turn off the lights. Or Please turn the lights off.

Throw away → (to discard)

 Inseparable Phrasal Verbs

Other Phrasal Verbs that can be followed by objects are inseparable. If the object is a
pronoun, it goes after the two parts.

Examples:
She’s looking for Hank. Or She’s looking for him.
I can’t get over the flu. Or I can’t get over it.

Some inseparable phrasal verbs are:

Call on → (to visit)


We’ll call on Mary tonight. Or We’ll call on her tonight.

Get over → (to recover from)


I’m getting over this cold. Or I’m getting over it.

Go over → (to check)


Let’s go over the answers. Or Let’s go over them.

Run into → (to meet by accident)


I ran into Larry last night. Or I ran into him last night.

Wait for → (to expect)


Are you waiting for Harriet? Or Are you waiting for her?

PHRASAL VERBS WITHOUT OBJECT

Some Phrasal Verbs do not take objects:

Examples: I get up early every morning.


When are you coming back?

Some Phrasal Verbs that are not used with objects are:

Break down → (to stop working)


Oh, no! This car is always breaking down!

Come back → (to return here)


Are you going to come back soon?

Come on → (to hurry)


Come on! We don’t want to be late.

Get up → (to arise)


What time do you get up?

Grow up → (to increase in size)


Your son is growing up fast.

Hold on → (to wait)


Could you hold on a second?

Hurry up → (to be quick)


Hurry up! Everyone is ready to go.

Look out → (to be careful)


Look out! A truck is coming very fast.

Show up → (to appear)


She finally showed up at 10 o’clock.

Slow down → (to go more slowly)


You’re driving too fast. Can you slow down, please?

Take off → (to leave the ground)


The plane is taking off right now.

Wake up → (to stop sleeping)


I don’t like to wake up too early.
