Design calculation of louvers support structure

1 . Introduction
Structure description :
The structure is a steel structure building

The louver support structure is made of 150X150X6 SHS,100X100X6 Angle.

The purpose of following calculations is as listed below;

To check the structural stability of the louver support structure for all incident loads on it.

Reference Documents and Design Parameters ::


1) Roof louvers fixing - LME-E-499-011

2) steel structures.
Wind load Data
Structure designed for worst combination of dead & wind loads on the structure..

3) All structural steel members conform to ASTM A36 / BS grade S275 steel or equivalent

4) All bolts conform to BS grade 8.8 or equivalent and galvanised .

5) Concrete strength on which supports are to be fixed is assumed C40 ( 40 N/mm2 )

6) Allowable deflections : Beams L/200 ; Cantilever Columns H / 180

Design codes::
Design of support structure for louvers has been done
conforming to following codes of practice.

* BS 5950 - Part 1:2000 -Structural use of steelwork in building.


* BS 8110 -1:1997 ,BS 8110-3:1985 -Structural use of concrete
* BS 6399-2:1997 for Wind Loading

Analysis and Design


Analysis and Design of the support structure for louver has been done using
STAAD Pro 2006 Analysis and Design software.
For Staad design of steel members British Code BS5950 has been used.

2 .STAAD model and Loads

1) Dead load ( DL)
self weight of supporting structure is calculated by STAAD programme.

2 ) Wind load (WL)

Design Pressure Calculation on horizontal face (On Roof louver)

External Pressure coefficients from Table 16(BS 6399-2), CPI = +0.2

Design pressure on vertical face = 1 x (-1.3-0.2) = 1.5 kN/m2


Maximum External Pressure co-efficient =-2.0
(Ref Table-8 for flat roof)

Internal Pressure co-efficient = -0.3


(For 4 walls equally permeable)

Design pressure on horizontal face = 1 x [-2- (-


= -1.7 KN/m2

Dead load of the arrangement (DL)

Weight of louvers =19x 2.5x .0157 = 0.745 KN


Weight of fixing accessories @5% = 0.037 KN
0.782KN (Acting Vertically)
At all internal nodes the vertical load considered is 0.782 KN
At all peripheral nodes the vertical load is 0.391 KN (½ of 0.659)

Wind load acting on the arrangement (WL)


Total wind load = 1 x 2.3 x 2.1x1.5 = 7.245 KN
Since the louver is having 50% permeability, the total load expected is = 0.5x7.245
= 3.62 KN
Thus at internal nods, total wind load acting will be 3.62 KN
The load acting on peripheral nodes will be 1.811 KN (½ of 3.62KN)

3) Load combinations:
(a) Service load combination :: ( for deflections)
1.0 DL
1.0 DL+1.0 WL
1.0 DL -1.0 WL

(b) Design load combination :: ( for design of steel members,design of connections etc.)
1.4 DL
1.0 DL + 1.4 WL
1.0 DL - 1.4 WL

Deflection check :

Refer Staad diagram for deflections

Max deflection = 8.478 mm < span /200 =2375/200 = 11.8mm

Actual deflection < allowable deflection

3 . Design of Connections

3.1 Anchor Connection B/W baseplate and 150X150X6mm SHS

Fx = 12 kN Mx = 30 kN
Fy = 90 kN My = 4 kN
Fz = 40 kN Mz =6 kN

Use 350x230 x16 thk base plate .


It is proposed to use 4 no. M16 fischer/equivalent anchor bolts

max tension in bolt due to Fz = 40 /4 = 10 kN


Max shear in bolt = Fy /4 = 90 /4 = 22.5 kN
Refer fischer anchor bolt catalogue :: HVU adhesive with HAS rod.
Tensile capacity: ( for 16 dia bolts) Refer catalogue:(page no:- 69,70,71)

max moment in end plate = 2 x 10 x 0.05 = 1kNm

Moment capacity of end plate per unit width = py.tp²/4 ..cl.6.3.4.3, BS5950-1:2000

= 275 x 230 x 16² /4 = 4.05 kNm > actual moment in end plate

Hence provided 4no. M16 fischer/equivalent anchor bolts/rod and the end plate are safe.

4. Conclusion :

** The proposed Louver support & the support structure and its members are safe for
given loads in combination with other loads.
** The proposed connections are structurally safe.
** The proposed anchors are structurally safe.
