Mainframe Computer

This document provides information about mainframe computers. It discusses that mainframes are large, expensive computers used by large hospitals to process large amounts of data like billing, payroll, and inventory. Mainframes were first invented in the 1930s and acquired their name due to their large size. Today, mainframes are still used by large hospitals to manage electronic medical records, business transactions, and other systems like laboratories, radiology, and admissions. The document compares mainframes to supercomputers and discusses their different purposes.

Mainframe
The mainframe computer is the most common, fast, large,
and expensive type of computer. It is a large multiuser central
computer that meets the computing needs of large and
medium sized public and private hospitals. Mainframes are
used for processing the large amount of repetitive
calculations like handling the biling, payroll, inventory control,
and business operations.
The first mainframe computer
was invented in the 1930s by

Development Harvard scholar Howard Aiken,

who popularized the name
mainframe. His idea was to

equations. Mainframes acquired
their name because of their size,
typically as large as a six-foot-
tall closet. They also required
specialized heating, ventilation
and cooling, as well as a
dedicated power supply.
