    DEFINITION of STENCIL PRINTING

    A method of transferring a pattern


    by brushing, spraying, or
    squeeging ink or paint through the
    open parts of the stencil cut from
    thin metal or cardboard. It is also
    known as pochoir.
    HISTORY of STENCIL PRINTING
    Hand stencils, made by blowing pigment over a hand held against a wall,
    have been found in Asia and Europe dating from over 35,000 years ago, and
    later prehistoric dates in other continents. After that stencilling has been
    used as a historic painting technique on all kinds of materials. Stencils are
    also used for cloth coloring especially in Japan. This type of cloth coloring
    using stencils are called Katazome, and it was used during the Edo period in
    feudal Japan. Stencils are also used in Europe to color old master prints
    from 1450. Those master prints were in black and white technique, and it
    was usually woodcuts. One thing that was are also colored by stencils is
    playing card. Stencils were used for printing and mass publications and
    everything else that were not supposed to be hand written.

    TYPES OF STENCIL TOOLS

    1. Stencil Brushes:
    These brushes are designed specifically for
    stenciling. A stencil brush has a flat top which is
    perfect for dabbing at the edge of the stencil to
    reduce the paint from seeping underneath. The
    bristles are also very stiff, which makes them less
    likely to slide underneath the stencil.
    2. Stencil Roller:
    For a quicker way to paint and for stencils with
    less details and shading a stencil roller is useful.
    This type of tool will be especially helpful when
    using a wall stencil or stencil you want to cover a
    large area. A stencil roller should be made of a
    dense foam. A normal paint roller will not give
    clean results like a foam roller. When using a
    stencil roller, push your roller into the paint for
    and allow to absorb. Make sure to blot off excess
    paint on a folded paper towel before beginning
    your painting.
    3. Spoucers:
    Spoucers allow for the absorbtion of the paint as
    well as the flat top of a stencil brush. With this
    tool, make sure to press directly on top of the
    edges to stop paint from seeping.
    4. Paint Brushes:
    If using a normal paint brush for
    stenciling, make sure to paint
    from the outside of the stencil to
    the inside. Never push paint
    towards the edge when painting
    inside the stencil. This will result
    in seeping and a less clean result
    on your stencil.

    5. Spray Painting:
    Another popular tool for stencil
    printing is by using spray colors.
