I view education as a powerful and versatile tool that if wielded in the right manner can bring
about change leaving behind a lifelong impact whoever comes into contact with it. Being born
and raised in Kenya, I have seen alot of people close to me, people with ability to bring change
in the society fail to do so due to lack of proper knowledge. From a young age therefore, I have
always devoted myself to being a pillar of change to the community especially through teaching
with an intent of eradicating illiteracy to those willing yet incapable of finding it hence being a
mentor to aspiring young people who want to shape their own narratives and futures.
The drive to educate has led me to volunteer in some of the upcoming educational institutions
in Kenya such as Islamia Adult centre and Visions of Alberta secondary school as a history and
swahili teacher as well as offering guidance and counselling to learners with troubled
backgrounds.
Alongside my degree at Mount Kenya University, I have authored two swahili books and one
history book that I am in the process of writing. That aside, I have one year work experience as
a teacher in Our Lady of Fatima Secondary School. My work placement at Our Lady of Fatima as
history and swahili teacher has been one of the most interesting yet exhausting experience in
my life, and although it was both emotionally and physically draining, it instilled a resolute
desire to practice teaching as a career and even take it to the next level.
The experience was exciting as it allowed me to express my love for history in the most active,
creative and intellectual manner. I particularly enjoyed sharing my knowledge about
controversial topics like evolution that seemed to elicit myriad criticism every single time with
regard to different doctrines that have been inculcated by diverse learners.
