Slide 2
After this presentation you will be able to describe basic steps of installing the ACS580
drive.
This presentation includes a video which demonstrates replacing an old drive with a new
ACS580 drive. The video covers mechanical and electrical installation as well as preparation
of motor and input cables.
In addition you will learn which cable types can be used and how to measure motor
insulation.

As you saw in the video, you have to ensure that the drive is safely disconnected.
Wait 5 minutes after disconnecting that the supply and DC side voltages disappear.
Measure to make sure that there are no residual voltages. Don’t take anyone’s word for it -
Check it yourself.
The cables connected to the relays might have up to 250 volts, so remember to measure
the relay voltage.
Note also to measure the motor side voltages especially with PM motors. The motor can
generate dangerous voltages if the rotor shaft is allowed to rotate. Make sure that the PM
motor does not rotate when you are installing the drive.

Before mounting the drive, check that you’ve received the right goods, check the type
label, and that there are no signs of damage.

Recommended types of cables

Slide 6
Symmetrical shielded cables are recommended for motor and input cables.
You can use a three-conductor cable with a concentric PE conductor as the shield. The
shield must meet the requirements of IEC 61439-1. You can check the requirements from
the ACS580 hardware manual.
If the shield doesn’t meet the requirements, you have to use a separate PE cable.
Alternatively, you can use a cable with a shield and symmetrically constructed PE
conductor. The PE conductor must also meet the requirements of the IEC standard.

Four conductor systems may be allowed, but you need to check the user’s manual for
limitations. For example, they may be allowed on the supply side, but not on the motor
side, or depending on the cable size, motor size, and local regulations.

A symmetrical shielded cable with individual shields for each phase conductor is not
allowed for supply or motor cabling.

Measuring insulation of the motor
September 20,
2019
Slide 10
You have to check the motor insulation resistance when installing or replacing a drive.
First check that the motor is disconnected from the drive output terminals.
Measure the insulation resistance between each phase conductor and the Protective Earth
using a measuring voltage of 1000 V.
The recommended insulation resistance values are stated in the user or hardware manual.
Note that moisture inside the motor casing will reduce the insulation resistance. If moisture
is suspected, dry the motor and repeat the measurement.
Don’t do any voltage tolerance or insulation resistance tests to the drive (e.g. hi-pot or
megger).
