1) Wastewater is discharged uniformly over the cross-section of a stream such that contaminant is
Kg
introduced into the stream at a rate of 2 . The stream is approximately 5-meter-wide and 2-
s
meter-deep, with an average flow velocity of 20 cm/sec and an estimated longitudinal diffusion
2
m
coefficient of 10 . The decay rate of the contaminant in the river is estimated at 0.1 min−1.
sec
(a) What is the concentration 100 m downstream of the source 10 minutes after the start of the
contaminant release?
(b) What is the concentration at the source 10 minutes after the start of the contaminant
release?
(c) What is the steady-state concentration at the source? (5M)
(a) If the Diffusion coefficients in the N-S & E- W Direction are 5 m2 /s and 10 m2 /s respectively,
calculate the concentration as a function of time at location 100 meters North and 100 meters
East of the spill.
(b) What is the concentration at the spill location after 5 minutes? (5M)
3. A Contaminated soil is to be excavated and treated in a completely mixed aerated lagoon at a
superfund site. To determine the time, it will take to treat the contaminated soil, a laboratory
completely mixed batch reactor is used to gather the following data. Assuming a first order reaction,
estimate the rate constant “k” and determine the time to achieve 99 % reduction in the original
concentration. (3M)

4. A Well-mixed sewage lagoon (a shallow pond) is receiving 430 m3 /d sewage out of a sewer pipe. The
lagoon has a surface area of 10 ha (hectares)and a depth of 1.0 meters. The pollutant concentration in
the raw sewage discharged into the lagoon is 180 mg/L. The organic matter in the sewage degrades
biologically (decays) in the larger according to first-order Kinetics. The reaction rate constant (decay
coefficient) is 0.70d −1 . Assuming no other water losses or gains (evaporation, seepage, or rainfall) and
that the lagoon is completely mixed, find the steady-state concentration of the pollutant in the larger
effluent. (2M)
