Design and Development of Smart Helmet To Avoid Road Hazards Using IoT

This document discusses the design and development of a smart helmet using Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to improve road safety for motorcycle riders. The proposed smart helmet system is equipped with alcohol sensors to detect if the rider's alcohol level exceeds the legal limit and prevent the bike from starting. It also contains ultrasonic sensors to detect potholes and speed breakers. If an accident is detected, the helmet can send location information using Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) and Global Positioning System (GPS) to a registered phone number. The goal is to reduce road accidents caused by drinking and driving and hazards using this intelligent, connected helmet system.

of light. LDR permits a lower voltage to go through it (high

reads the voltage from the LDR, which converts read analog

VI. CONCLUSIONS AND FUTURE

ENCHNACEMENT
IoT based smart helmet is a cost effective approach which
can be employed for safety of the bike riders. Smart helmet
uses minimal hardware and software resources which are easy
to install and use. Smart helmet provides solution to many
problems, which occur due to violation of traffic rules. The
proposed work aims at minimizing the frequency of head
injuries that occur during the road accident. It also reduces
the number of accidents that occur due to drink and drive case
since bike ignition is avoided without any manual intervention,
if the biker has consumed the alcohol. The smart helmet gives
information about speed breakers and pothole to rider using
ultrasonic sensors, which helps in avoiding accidents. In case
if rider meets with an accident, the smart helmet ensures to
provide the location the rider to the predefined phone numbers
through GSM and MEMS technology. The future enhancement
can be done by using circuit that can be powered by solar
energy so that it uses green energy and does no harm to
environment. This intelligent system can be manufactured in
a compact size so that it is globally accepted.
