The chart illustrates how many audiences attended the cinema between different age groups in
the US from 2000 to 2011.
Overall, viewers aged 15-24 watched movies the most throughout the period. It is also noticeable
that the average proportion of moviegoers witnessed a growth in all age groups.
Looking first at the 15-24 and 35 and over groups, the percentage of film viewers who were 15-
24 began at about 16% in the first year. A steady increase was seen in this group over 6 years
and reached 44% in 2006, followed by fluctuating in the range from 35% to 50% and peaking at
over 60% at the end of the period. Conversely, the figure for the oldest groups mentioned was
generally the lowest, starting at 1% and increasing marginally to 13% in the last year.
Moving to the two remaining groups, 7-14-year-old attendance which was the second largest
group hovered around the 15% mark while the figure for the 25-35 age group witnessed a
progressive growth of 10% throughout the first 5 years. After that, the percentages of these two
groups intersected with each other at 14% in 2005, and then the 25-35 age group saw an unstable
trend, at 24% in 2007 and 19% in 2008. Also, there was a considerable increase to 30% in the
youngest group, followed by a slight decrease to under 25% one year later before intersecting
with the 25-35 group the second time with about 32% in 2009. Finally, these groups followed the
same pattern at the end of the period, at 30%.
