Basic QGIS Training
Familiarizing QGIS
QGIS (also known as Quantum GIS) is a free and open source desktop GIS application that supports
viewing, editing, and analysis of geospatial data. To download the software online, go to
http://www.qgis.org/en/site/. The recommended version of QGIS to be downloaded is QGIS 3.28.2
Firenze.
Data Requirements:
● Shapefile
o Philippine Administrative Boundary level 2
A. QGIS 3.28.2 Firenze Interface

Browser Panel - in this panel, the directories of the files can be seen and these files can be browsed
without leaving the main QGIS window. Only two type of files can be browsed on the browser panel,
the vector and raster file.
Layers Panel - both vector and raster file can be loaded in this panel. The layers can be rearranged
depending on the order of the layers to be displayed.
Display Panel - the files on the layers panel are displayed in this panel. The first layer on the layers
panel will be on the top of the other files displayed.
Attribute Table - this is where the geographic information about the layer is displayed. It is displayed
as a spreadsheet for easy editing and analysis.
Processing Toolbox –this panel contains all the tools and functions needed for any analysis for both
vector and raster layers. Additional plugins are required for other tools not included in the current
toolbox which is readily available to be downloaded on plugins manager.
Panels and Toolbars
Most of the panels are already displayed by default. To be able to
open other available panels, right-click beside the space on the toolbar
area. A checkbox panel will appear containing all the panels. Simply
check all the panels that will be displayed on the main interface. To
disable a panel, just uncheck the panel in the same checkbox. The
same with toolbars, the available toolbars are also shown in the
checkbox.
The toolbars are always located in the upper portion of the interface.
Each toolbar contains the tools for each GIS function for easy access
and can be pinned anywhere in the interface for convenient use.
Sample Toolbars
Project Toolbar
- Consists of tools such as for creating new project, opening
previous projects, and saving the current project.

Editing Toolbar
- When editing a vector data, this toolbar will become available.
The tools may vary depending on vector type of the data.

Map Navigation Toolbar

- Consists of tools for map navigation such as zoom in/out,
panning, and zoom to extent. It also includes the tools for the new
map which is linked in the main map.

Attributes Toolbar
- Includes the tools for easy filtering and selection of attributes. It also includes tools for
combining attributes into another field such as a field calculator tool.
B. Data Format
Raster Data – composed of pixels (grid cells) that defines the value of the pixel area. The pixel
represents its location and area of its characteristics such as temperature, elevation, slope, and
classification. This dataset can be satellite imagery, google earth images, and aerial photographs.

Sample Raster Dataset. Left image shows the drone-captured image of Villamar Beach Resort and
right image shows the difference in terrain elevation in the same location
Vector Data - this data format is a representation of the world expressed in points, lines, and polygons.
This type of data contains spatial information and can store additional data that has discrete
boundaries.
