Fly hw1

This document contains three homework problems related to flight dynamics: 1. Solving an ordinary differential equation analytically and numerically, and commenting on the stability of the system. 2. Finding the input-output transfer function of a state-space system and commenting on its stability. 3. Calculating various aerodynamic forces and moments on a flat plate based on given pressure and shear stress distributions.

Flight Dynamics
Homework Problems #1

1. Assume a dynamic system is described by the following ordinary differential equation (ODE):
y (4) + 9y (3) + 30ÿ + 42ẏ + 20y = F (t) (1)
where y (n) = dn y/dtn .
(a) (10 %) Let F (t) = 1 for t ≥ 0, please solve the ODE analytically.
(b) (10 %) Please give a brief comment to the evolution of the system.
(c) (5 %) Please give a brief comment to the stability of the system.
(d) (10 %) Suppose F (t) = 1. Please run a numerical simulation of this system for 10 seconds
with initial conditions: y(0) = 0, ẏ(0) = 0, ÿ(0) = 0, and y (3) (0) = 0 to verify your
analytical solution.
2. The state-space equation of the dynamic system has the following form:
Ẋ = AX + Bu
y = CX
The corresponded input-output transfer function T (s) can be found by
Y (s)
T (s) = = C(sI − A)−1 B (2)
U (s)
where I is the identity matrix. Consider the following system:

0 1 1
Ẋ = X+ u
−2 −3 1

y = 2 3 X
(a) (10 %) Please find the input-output transfer function of this system.
(b) (5 %) Please give a brief comment to the stability of this system.
3. Consider an infinitely thing flat plat with a 1-m chord at an angle of attack of 10◦ in a
supersonic flow. The pressure and shear stress distributions on the upper and lower surfaces
are respectively given by
pu = 4 × 104 (x − 1)2 + 5.4 × 104
pl = 2 × 104 (x − 1)2 + 1.73 × 105
τu = 288x−0.2
τl = 731x−0.2 ,
where x is the distance from the leading edge in meters and p and τ are in newtons per square
meter. Calculate

1
(a) (10 %) the normal and axial forces
(b) (10 %) the lift and drag
(c) (10 %) the moments about the leading edge
(d) (10 %) the moments about the quarter chord (c/4)
(e) (10 %) the location of the center of pressure
