    Camp I Am Special

    VOLUNTEERING AT CAMP TRANSFORMS LIVES


    Catholic Charities Camp I Am Special offers an exceptional opportunity for young adults/teenagers
    to develop life skills while also providing companionship to someone with intellectual and
    developmental differences. Camp is a special place where:

    You’ll develop effective communication skills to interact with people at every level - Campers,
    other Buddies, Catholic Charities leadership staff, parents and more.

    You’ll learn professionalism and compassion through group activities - contributing to the
    growth and development of your Camper.

    You’ll be challenged to quickly resolve diverse issues including, how to support your Camper
    with making his or her bed and Camper health and safety.

    You’ll gain practical, real-life training on how to work as part of a team and help build the
    culture of your camp community.

    You’ll develop innovative and fun ways to engage with your Camper and learn how to
    implement alternative plans when faced with unexpected changes to a routine.

    days, hours, or even minutes you create an everlasting friendship with your Camper. Growing up I dreamed of becoming
    a veterinarian, but Camp showed me that I was called to do something else. I am now looking into occupational therapy
    because, after a few weeks of Buddying, I knew I wanted to do something like this forever." Becca Clark, Buddy

    “I knew what being a Buddy looked like. I even knew what it might feel like. However, I was not ready for how being
    a Buddy was going to affect me. When I saw my Camper, everything changed. My purpose for the week went from
    obtaining service hours to becoming a friend. Through the years I volunteered over 10 weeks as a Buddy and then
    became a Camp Leader. In my second month of college, I switched my major from Biology to Applied Behavior
    Analysis. I now work full time with children with disabilities. Camp gave me patience, fortitude, and confidence, but
    above all, it gave me a passion and a career path.” Matthew Harrington, Buddy
