What It Is
1.Basic Assertion
“I wish I could have expressed this idea earlier, because now someone else has
taken the credit.”
“Excuse me, first I want to finish my work, then I shall go with you.”
2.Emphatic Assertion
It conveys sympathy to someone, and usually has two parts: the first encompasses
recognition of the feelings or situations of the other person, and the second is a
statement that shows support for the other person’s viewpoint, feelings, or rights such
as:
“I understand you are busy, and me too, but it is difficult for me to finish this
project on my own. So, I want you to help me complete this project.”
“I know this is making you angry and frustrated because you have not gotten a
response yet. But I can help you by giving you an estimate of how long it might
take.”
11
3.Escalating Assertion
“If you do not finish this work by 6:00 tonight, I will engage the services of another
worker.”
“I really want to finish this point before you start yours.”
4.Language Assertion
It involves the first person pronoun “I,” and is useful for expressing negative feelings.
Nevertheless, it constructively lays emphasis on a person’s feelings of anger such as:
“When you speak harshly, I cannot work with you because I feel annoyed.
Therefore, I want you to speak nicely and then assign me a task.”
“When I don’t get enough sleep, it affects my nerves and I feel irritated.
Therefore, I try to go to bed earlier.”
Example: What city is the best city in the world and why?
Assertion: New York City is the best city in the world because of the diversity it
provides.
Context: There are people of all different races, ethnicities and languages in the Big
Apple.
3. Include evidence. This is the part where you, the author, show the reader/prove to
the reader what you are saying is true. You need to include a direct quote to support
12
your idea.Make sure the evidence you are including supports your assertion/topic
sentence. Make sure it is embedded 9integrated smoothly) into the text of the paper.
Don’t forget to properly cite your evidence.
5. Explain your evidence. Use your own words. (This is the most important part of the
paragraph. It demonstrates your critical thinking.) Provide a clear explanation of the
quote and how/why it supports your assertion. Do not simply restate the quote in your
own words.
Commentary: Living in the city that has such diversity provides citizens opportunities
to interact and appreciate people of all different backgrounds. In this global economy
and world, it is important to have exposure to different customs and cultures.
Conclusion: The diversity that New York City provides makes it an excellent place to
live in and grow as an individual and appreciate others’ differences.
What’s More
Here are some activities for you to practice. Let’s try this.
Instructions. The following statements are taken from the story, “Man in Dapitan,” by
Loreto Paras Sulit. React to each statement by putting a checkmark on the
emoticon/symbol that counterparts your feeling.

win with his fists, but
that would not prove
that his answer is
correct.”

bright smile
completely won their
hearts.

that followed, Lope
who had been the
most interested and
active, appeared to
be very absent-
minded.

reach her eyes.

What I Can Do

“My Father Goes to Court” by Carlos Bulosan.
Example: We had as a next door neighbor a very rich man, whose sons and daughters
seldom came out of the house.
Answer: I think the very rich man is just protective of his children that is why he seldom
lets them go out.
15
1. The chickens were young and tender and the fat that dripped into the burning coals
gave off an enchanting odor. We inhaled the heavenly spirit that drifted out to us.
Some days the rich man appeared at a window and glowered at us. He looked at us
one by one, as though condemning us.

2. As the time went on, the rich man’s children became thin and anemic, while we grew
even more robust and full of life.

paper. The rich man had filed a complaint against us.

about. He told father the man claimed that for years we had been stealing the spirit
of his wealth and food.
