Define the following terms (not more than 5 lines) Total Marks = 20
1. What is Diode and its firing potential? 2 Marks
A diode is an electronic component made of semi-conductor material, which allows current through it to flow in one
direction only. In this direction, a small amount of voltage is needed to be bypassed due to resistance of diode. This
voltage is called Firing potential of diode. Very little current flows through diode if applied voltage is less than it, but the
value increases exponentially once it passes it.
2. What are differences between the PNP and NPN transistors? 2 Marks
A transistor has three regions: collector, base, and emitter, where base is sandwiched between collector and emitter. A
PNP transistor has an N-type (having more free electrons) base between P-type (having more holes) collector and
emitter, while a NPN transistor has a P-type base between N-type collector and emitter.
3. What are the symbols, Boolean forms, and pin configuration of the given ICs: 7400, 7402, 74266, 7404? 8 Marks
A DMM (digital multimeter) is used for measurement of different electric quantities such as voltage (AC/DC), current
(AC/DC) and resistance. A function generator is used to produce a specific type of voltage waveform from a simple AC
wave input.
5. What is difference in between CRO and DSO and its uses? 2 Marks
A CRO (Cathode Ray Oscilloscope) receives input in analogue form, converts it into digital format before using electron
ray modulation to display its pictures in analogue form. A DSO (Digital Storage Oscilloscope) receives analogue signals,
converts them into digital and then notes and displays their values at different intervals of time. Since both are
Oscilloscopes, both are used to display visual information regarding a signal, e.g., in audio and video recording and
equipment, voltage signal testing in circuits, and displaying electromagnetic signals in different areas of research.
6. What is the effect of diodes being in series and parallel configuration? 2 Marks
When diodes are added in series with each other, the net voltage drop across them is equal to the sum of voltage drop
across every individual diode. Since firing voltage remains constant, this results in a fixed DC voltage about the diode
combination. In parallel, the current divides and passes through both diodes while potential drop across all diodes is
same. This results in an increase in current carrying capacity of diodes.
