Morse Code - Freebie

Morse code is a method of communication using short and long sounds or marks. It was invented in the 1830s and allowed important messages to be sent over long distances quickly before modern technology. Morse code used dots and dashes to represent letters and was transmitted through telegraph machines. While newer technologies have replaced its primary use, Morse code still plays a role in some communication areas like amateur radio and emergencies.

HISTORY OF MORSE CODE
A BRIEF Morse code is like a secret language made up of dots
HISTORY called dit (short beeps) and dashes called dah (long
beeps). It was invented in the 1830s by Samuel Morse
and Alfred Vail. They wanted a way to send messages
quickly over long distances, which was a big challenge
back then. Imagine living in a world without
smartphones, emails, or instant messaging!

HOW IT Morse code was used to send messages through

WORKED: telegraph machines. The operator would tap out a
message in Morse code, and the telegraph machine
would turn these taps into electrical signals. These
signals traveled along wires to another telegraph
machine far away, which would then translate them back
into Morse code. Another operator would then read this
code and write down the message.

IMPORTANCE IN Before the internet and telephones, Morse code was like
COMMUNICATION: the WhatsApp of the 19th century! It changed the way
people communicated, making it possible to send news,
important updates, and personal messages across
countries and even continents in just minutes. It was
especially important for ships at sea to send distress
signals or communicate with the land.

MORSE CODE Even though we have more advanced technology now,

TODAY: Morse code is still used in some areas. It's a fun and
interesting skill to learn, especially for people interested
in amateur radio. It's also used in emergency situations
where other forms of communication might not work.

THE MOST The most famous Morse code signal is "SOS" (· · · — — — · · ·).
FAMOUS MORSE It's an international distress signal used by ships and aircraft. It ···———···
CODE doesn't stand for "Save Our Ship" or "Save Our Souls" as some
people think; it was just chosen because it's easy to send and
recognize!

THE RMS TITANIC SINKING

Morse code played a crucial role in the disaster's aftermath. As the ship began to sink, the
radio operators urgently transmitted distress signals in Morse code, commonly-used British
ship code "CQD" (· - · - · - - · ·), which translated to "All stations: Distress."
UNDERSTANDING MORSE CODE
Morse code is a method of sending
DITS AND
DAHS messages using a series of dots and dashes.
In Morse code, a dot is small and round,
similar to a period, and is known as a 'dit.'

A dash, on the other hand, is a longer

horizontal mark, referred to as a 'dah.' Every
letter in the English alphabet is represented
by unique sequences of these dits and dahs,
which can be combined to form words and
sentences.

UNDERSTANDING The timing in Morse code is key to

THE TIMING understanding and correctly interpreting the
message:
A dit represents a single unit of sound.
When transitioning from dits to dahs or
vice versa within the same letter, a
silence lasting one unit is observed.
A dah is equivalent to the length of
three dits.
When writing a message in Morse code,
a space equivalent to the length of
three dots is used to separate individual
letters, and a longer space equal to
seven dots is used between words.
