His Priesthood and OMI Journey
Fr. Jerry Kambinyam Jr. OMI is a 34-year-old priest who came from D. R. Congo,
Africa. He entered the congregation of Oblates of Mary Immaculate in his home country
Congo, Africa. One of his current mission is to go here in the Philippines to study and
still be a part of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate here in Cotabato City, Philippines as a
priest. Those are the reasons why we often spot Fr. Jerry Kambinyam Jr. OMI roaming
around the university and sometimes can be seen in alot of church activities inside NDU.
He is currently taking his 3rd bachelor's degree which is the Bachelor of Science in
Business Administration Major in Human Resource Management and participates in
majority of the church mass in NDU.
Fr. Jerry Kambinyam Jr. OMI studied in a Minor Seminary school in Congo and were
trained about the Bible, the wors of God, and the Priesthood life as well. Upon reading
the words of God and upn seeing priests who are living inside his seminary school snd
their way of life inspired him to pursue priesthood. His family encouraged him as well to
become a priest because his family is also closer to God and fully supports him to
whatever decision he makes, that is why he got really inspired to enter priesthood.
At first, Fr. Jerry Kambinyam Jr. OMI wanted to be part of their own Diocese in his home
town but when he learned about the Charism (Charisma in French) of the congregation of
Oblates of Mary Immaculate which means to bring and spread good news especially to
the poor and after reading the book of Oblates of Mary Immaculate, he changed his mind
and decided to enter the OMI congregation instead.
He answered the calling because God told him to do so. God communicated with him
through the other priests he interacted with. And he thinks that being a priest is his life
vocation because he went through alot of challenges before he got accepted to the OMI
congregation. Before he entered the Oblates' congregation, his previous director to his
previous Minor Seminary school was against the idea of him entering the OMI
congregation. His previous director did a horrible thing to stop him from going into
another congregation. Fr. Jerry's report in his previous Minor Seminary school was kept
by his previous director and was not released. Fr. Jerry can't enter any congregation
without the report that is why Fr. Jerry looked for help. The previous director even
threatened him to fire his father who is working in his previous Minor Seminary school
just to stop him from leaving the Diocese. Luckily, another priest helped him to get his
report back and right after that, he got accepted into the OMI congregation after what
happened. That is why he believes that priesthood is his life vocation.
Fr. Jerry was amazed about how they implement their charism in their congregation and
the way how they present themselves. He was also amazed by the clothing style of these
priests that made him want to enter the OMI congregation. But the main reason why is
that, Oblates of Mary Immaculate are missionaries that travels alot to spread the word of
God in different places and Fr. Jerry wants to do the same unlike to his home town's
Diocese, he can't do missions that are outside their town because it's the Diocese's
policy.
When did he answered the calling for priesthood?
Fr. Jerry Kambinyam Jr. OMI became offcially a priest in August 1, 2018 and he was 29
years old at that time. But earlier before becoming an official priest, he was a former
formation member of the OMI congregation, he was 19 years old when he got accepted to
the formation of Oblates. Before he got accepted as a formation member, he submitted
an application letter and had taken the exam and answered the devotion in entering the
congregation. After being a formation member for 10 years, he bacame one of the OMI
priest.
He started his priesthood journey in his home country which is in Congo. He bacame a
chaplain of one of the universities in his home town and at the same time teaches Señor
High School inside the university. In addition to that, he was assigned as a Provincial
Secretary in his home town and did it for 4 years before coming here in the Philippines
for his mission.
According to Fr. Jerry, the process was normally hard. He trained for 10 years in his case
parts of his training process was to pursue bachelor in philosophy, bachelor in theology,
and alot more of steps and reports after reports. Fr. Jerry said that the process was really
hard but at the end all of the efforts are worth it.
Fr. Jerry said that his experience after entering the OMI congregation was good because
he's already doing his tasks as an Oblate to bring the good news to the people, helped
and met many people which made him forever grateful for the experience. He hopes that
in the future, he will still be enjoying doing the same tasks as an Oblate of Mary
Immaculate. He believes that he was called to be a priest and he will die being a priest.
