TET HOLIDAY IN VIETNAM

Although there are many celebrations throughout the year, Tet or the Lunar New
Year holiday is the most important celebration for Vietnamese people. This is a special
occasion for Vietnamese families to welcome the New Year after hard working days and
reunite together.
Vietnamese people celebrate the Lunar New Year annually, based on the lunar
calendar. Tet became the national holiday and it also expresses deeply cultural
characteristics of the country. It takes place around late January or early February.
However, it is closer to a week or ten days, as many activities occur before or after.
First, the preparation for Tet holiday takes place about a week before because it
requires many steps. Members of families clean and redecorate their houses, especially the
ancestral altars with a five-fruit tray, watermelon, and flowers. Then, they buy food, drinks
such as cookies, dried candied fruits, roasted seeds (melon, sunflower, pumpkin,...), wine,
beer or soft drinks, etc... to offer their guests and to store because many shops are closed
for some days. Besides, a branch of peach blossom or apricot blossom or a kumquat tree
cannot be absent from every home during these special days. Children are the most eager,
as their parents buy them new clothes to celebrate the New Year.

Second, in addition to shopping, many Vietnamese families make Banh Chung or
Banh Tet, pickled onion, frozen meat or caramelized pork and eggs, which are the
country's traditional dishes on Tet holiday. Especially, in the 23rd day of twelfth month,
people celebrate the traditional ceremony to see Kitchen God, who is trusted to bring their
wishes to the God, to return to heaven.

Third, the first day of Tet is the most important day and it is reserved for nuclear
family. The action of being the first footing, the person who has good temper, good name,
morality and success, to enter a house at Tet, is one of the most important rituals. After
that, children wear colorful clothes and give their elders the traditional Tet wishes then
receive “lucky money”, which is a sum of money wrapped with a red envelope. People
believe that it could protect children from elves and also bring them good fortune, health
in new year.

Finally, during the first days of New Year, Vietnamese people do things supposed
to be good for themselves and their loved ones such as wearing red clothes, buying salt,
taking chance or praying and avoid saying and doing taboos such as sweeping the house,
loaning or paying, breaking something Each region in Vietnam has its own customs to
celebrate Tet, which are very special and unique.

To sum up, "Tet" is a very familiar word to Vietnamese people whenever they think
about the country. It drags people out of their routine life, brings those who are far away
from home, reunite and give love with their loved one. Tet is a cozy and wonderful
holiday. I love my country and this important celebration so much.
That’s all. Thank you very much for you attention!
