All Questions Are Compulsory. Make Suitable Assumptions Wherever Necessary

The document is a midterm exam for a Process Dynamics and Control course. It contains 6 questions: 1) Develop a dynamic model and perform a degrees of freedom analysis for a two-compartment reactor. 2) Use Laplace transforms to find the solution for a given process model. 3) Linearize a model of a distillation column stage and derive transfer functions. 4) Calculate parameters and derive models for a pressure-measuring element. 5) Derive a transfer function relating a process to its valve output through various control elements. 6) Show that a first order model approximates integration for short times under a step input.

BIRLA GOA CAMPUS, SECOND SEMESTER 2019 – 2020

MID-SEM Test: Process Dynamics and Control (CLOSED BOOK)
COURSE CODE: CHE F342
DATE: 07/03/2020 TIME: 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM MAX. MARKS: 60
______________________________________________________________________________
ALL QUESTIONS ARE COMPULSORY. MAKE SUITABLE ASSUMPTIONS WHEREVER NECESSARY

Question 1 [8 + 3 = 11 Marks]
A closed stirred tank reactor with two compartments (each with constant hold up V1 and V2) is show in Fig. Q1.
Reactants are continuously fed to the first compartment where they are preheated by energy liberated in the
exothermic reaction (A  B), which occurs in the second
compartment. The wall between the two compartments is
quite thin and allows the heat transfer (with an overall
heat transfer coefficient of U). The outside of the reactor is
well insulated and cooling coil is built into the second
compartment to remove excess energy liberated in the
reaction (Consider the overall heat transfer coefficient for
this heat transfer is UC). Assume that the reaction is first
order and the rate of reaction is given as
Fig. Q1
mol of A/h L (where k is a rate constant)

All flowrates are in L/h and concentrations are in mol/L. The heat of reaction is ∆H (J/mol). Assume that qi, Ti, cAi and
TC all may vary)
(a) Develop a dynamic model for both the compartments (for T1, T2, cA, cB)
(b) Perform the degrees of freedom analysis and identify input and output variables.

Question 2 [12 Marks]

A process is represented by the following models
( ) ( )

Find x1(t) by using Laplace transform, partial fraction method and inverse Laplace transform.

Question 3 [7 + 6 = 13 Marks]
A single equilibrium stage in a distillation column is shown in Fig. Q3. The model that
describes this stage is
( ) ( )

a) Linearize the above model and express it in terms of deviation variables

b) For constant liquid and volume flow rates (L and V), derive the following transfer
functions
( ) ( )
( ) ( )
Question 4 [6 + 4 = 10 Marks]
A step change from 15 to 29 psi in actual pressure results in the measured response from a pressure indicating
element shown in Fig. Q4.
(a) Assuming second order dynamics, calculate all important parameters and write an approximate transfer
function in the form

Fig. Q4

Where R’ is instrument output deviation (mm) variable and P’ is the actual pressure deviation (psi)

(b) Write an equivalent differential equation model in terms of actual (not deviation) variables

Question 5 [3 + 6 = 9 Marks]
A control system contains the following different sections with given transfer functions.

Process Measurement Controller Valve

X(s) (Gp) (Gm) (Gc) (Gv) Y(s)

Where
( ) ( ) ( ) ( )
( )( )

(a) Find out the transfer function between output variable of Valve (Y(s) to the input variable to the process (X(s))
(b) Approximate the obtained transfer function to FOPTD model using Skogestad technique. Find out the values of
K, τ and θ.

Question 6 [5 Marks]

input
