This document provides an overview of practical electronics components including resistors, capacitors, and inductors. Resistors are used to reduce current flow and adjust signal levels. Capacitors store electrical energy in an electric field and are used to smooth voltage. Inductors store energy in a magnetic field and are used in circuits like filters and transformers. The document discusses component identification, properties, types, and circuit symbols for these basic electronics elements.

Outline
• A resistor is a passive two-terminal electrical component that
implements electrical resistance as a circuit element.
• In electronic circuits, resistors are used to reduce current
flow, adjust signal levels, to divide voltages, bias active
elements, and terminate transmission lines, among other
uses.
• Ohm’s Law V = I . R
• Where V = Voltage in volts ; I – Current in amps; R – resistance
in ohms

Capacitor
• A capacitor is a device that stores electrical energy in an
electric field. It is a passive electronic component with two
terminals. The effect of a capacitor is known as capacitance.
C = ε(A/d)
A= Area; d= Distance;
ε = Permittivity

C = Q/V

Q = Charge
V = Voltage

Polarized & Non Polarized

• Non- Polarized Capacitor • Polarized Capacitor

Capacitor Value Calculation
• For Electrolytic & Polarized Capacitors, Values are printed over
the capacitor itself in microfarads.
• For Disc & non polarized capacitors, Values printed over the
capacitor are interpreted as follows:
• For 3 digit’s capacitor code, the first two digits are the
capacitance value in pF and the third digit is a multiplier factor
of first two digits to calculate the final capacitance value of
the capacitor.
• Example 1: 104 = 10 * 10^4 = 10 * 10000 = 100000 pF (pico
farad) = 100 nF = 0.1 uF

• Example 2: 152 = 15 * 10^2 = 1500 pF = 1.5 nF
• Similar way the capacitance of other values printed over the
capacitor as follows:

• If last digit is > 5 then, this calculation holds good

• 108 = 10 / 10^(10-8) = 10 / 10 ^ 2 pF = 10 / 100 pF = 0.1 pF

• 109 = 10 / 10^ (10-9) = 10 / 10 ^ 1 pF = 10 / 10 pF = 1.0 pF

• 689 = 68 / 10^(10-9) = 68 / 10 ^ 1 pF = 68 / 10 pF = 6.8 pF

• An inductor – also called a coil, choke is a passive two
terminal electrical component that stores the energy in a
magnetic field, when electric current flows through it.
