report (A–C). You may choose each report more than once.

Pitch reports
A Report from Ben
I was very impressed with the way John made his pitch. He held himself very well and used a good range of
gestures and eye contact to interact with the audience. Although he didn’t use any notes, I didn’t feel that he
was just reciting the speech that he had prepared. I felt that he was actually talking to the audience. I liked
the way he didn’t bombard us with numerous details about his product and how it would work. I felt the
explanations of how his product would fill the gap in the market were interesting and I think he could
definitely start a fashion here. My only criticism is that he did speak very quickly at times and then it was a
little hard to understand what he was saying. I would advise him to take deep breaths between sentences to
give himself time to think and slow himself down. I’m definitely sold on the idea of investing in his product.
Tina’s presentation appeared a little improvised to me. Her excessive eye contact and big gestures gave me
the impression that she was very nervous rather than enjoying herself. Although she did explain how she’d
come up with the idea for this app, she dwelt far too much on the technical details and I’m afraid I rather lost
my concentration in that section of the talk. I’m sure this app may become all the rage, but I’m afraid that I’m
not going to be supporting its development.

B Report from Peter

I thoroughly enjoyed John’s pitch. I found it very interesting and entertaining. I liked the personal experience
story that he told at the start that drew the audience in and demonstrated a real need for this product.
I thought his body language was nicely controlled and he was always engaging with the audience. My
criticism would be that he hadn’t put enough thought into potential questions that would be asked. In the
question and answer section at the end I felt he floundered a little with some questions and his answers
weren’t very clear. Overall though, it was a good presentation and I will think about putting up some money
for his product.
I must say I found Tina’s pitch very informative. I regarded myself as quite up-to-date with all the latest
technology, but clearly I’m not quite as well informed as I thought. I like the idea behind her app very much
and think the concept has great potential and wouldn’t just be a passing fashion. However, I think Tina needs
to work on her presentation skills and pay more attention to the consumers’ needs and questions if she’s
going to succeed with her idea. I’m going to take my time to consider this option.

C Report from Simone

John’s speech was quite entertaining. His body language was quite strong with a considerable amount of
gesturing and facial expressions, not all of which I thought were necessary. He would keep clasping his hands
together, which I found rather annoying. I do believe that he made a connection with the audience and his
personal anecdote helped on that front. I felt that the presentation lacked a few specific details about where
he would find outlets for his products and how he would market them. I think a little more information
would have helped to convince me that he had thought through all aspects of the proposal. I don’t think I’ll
be making an investment in his product.
I considered Tina’s presentation to be quite an eye-opener. I don’t know very much about phones and apps
and I found her idea intriguing. I thought that she engaged with the audience, although I could tell that she
was nervous at the beginning. She clearly gained confidence as the pitch progressed and she appeared fully
in control when she was specifying all the details of the app. I think perhaps she could have spent less time
on the specific details and turned more attention to the consumers’ queries, but on the whole I think she
probably answered most of the queries in her own way. I’m definitely considering making her an offer. I think
this could become the next big thing.

Writing
15 You and your friends have just discussed whether fashion has any bearing on the world of technology.
You have made the notes below.

Is fashion important in the world of technology?

• Fashion drives the appearance of gadgets.
• People only buy the gadgets they think are in vogue.
• Fashion is irrelevant – it’s what the gadget does that is important.

Write an essay discussing the relevance of fashion in the world of technology. You should explain whether
you think it is important or not, giving reasons to support your answer. You may use the opinions in the
notes, but you must include your own ideas as well.

Write 250–275 words.

Is fashion important in the world of technology?

This question was recently discussed by a lot of people in different fields, and
