STATEMENT OF PURPOSE FOR FINANCE

Why do I want Finance as my specialization subject?

‘Fortune sides with him who dares’.- Virgil

My name is Ramita Gogia and I belong to the First Year of the Master’s program at Symbiosis School
of Economics. A little about myself first. When I had to choose the streams for my 11th grade I was so
confused between Commerce and Science. Commerce because during my childhood I saw my mother
studying Accounts for CS exams and the balance sheets really piqued my interest but I ended up taking
Non-medical (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) with economics. I have done my Bachelors in
Mathematics (Hons) from Delhi University and had Economics as a minor subject.

My first preference for specialization is Finance as the subject and the topic has always piqued my
interest and I believe that opting for this course has been a step forward and closer towards pursuing
my career in this field. Watching movies and shows like Bazaar, Big Bull, Scam 1992 etc. has taken
my interest further only. Taking my interest forward in the same field, during the lockdown period, I
also enrolled myself for an online course on Stock Market and Finance in order to make myself
acquainted with the functioning of the stock market. Whilst doing the course I got to know how does
the stock market actually work- the IPO, buying and selling of securities, Role of SEBI etc. I also used
to sit in my sister’s Business studies online classes just because they were interesting and I thought that
this is something that a common man should be acquainted with.

Without a doubt, we live in an era of finance, where financial actors, institutions, markets, and
motivations rule the global capitalist economy. The transition of financial intermediation from banks to
financial markets, as well as the introduction of financial market logic into previously unrelated fields
and domains, have not only had a negative impact on development but have also altered the "rules of
the game" and made it easier for a self-serving global elite to engage in rent-seeking behavior. The field
is so diversified that it will help me connect to people from around the world.

I was fortunate to have had the exposure to a wide range of fascinating and challenging disciplines. And
I know I work good with quantitative data rather than a qualitative one and as mathematics being my
under-graduation majors will certainly prove to be my strength. I think finance is one of the fields with
plenty of opportunities to grow and excel in, and if given a chance, I will definitely take the advantage
and make the best out of it. I am also planning to invest in stocks and researching for the same to get a
better idea of how these things work in reality.

I am a sincere, hardworking and a diligent student who strives to have a clear vision about what to do
in life. I aim to make a career in the field of finance and I am very determinant to do all the possible
hard work needed. I’m a quick learner and would love to learn new concepts and put forward my ideas
wherever I can. My goal is to acquire deeper profound professional insights and put them to use.

I’m a keen observer and love to observe just general things around me. I am confident that studying
finance will empower me by developing extensive financial knowledge and quantitative research skills
which will enable me to become an expert analyst, understand market trends and risk, and manage
financial portfolios. Also my Master’s degree in Economics (Finance) at this institution will give me a
strong grounding and a perfect channel to capitalize on my strengths.

Hence, I would be really grateful if I get finance as my specialization for the next semester.
