STEM
STEM stands for Science Technology Engineering Mathematics and STEM Education refers to studying
these areas with theoretical as well as a practical approach. A STEM curriculum is designed to provide its
students with maximum possible practical exposure and hands-on experience in a particular field. It offers
a perfect blend of course modules with a few mandatory lab assignments and group projects, which help
in learning through practical implementation of theoretical knowledge. This kind of vocational training is
being introduced at the K-12 level in many schools worldwide.

ROBOTICS
Robotics is the intersection of science, engineering and technology that produces machines, called robots,
that substitute for (or replicate) human actions. Robots were originally built to handle monotonous tasks
(like building cars on an assembly line), but have since expanded well beyond their initial uses to perform
tasks like fighting fires, cleaning homes and assisting with incredibly intricate surgeries. Each robot has a
differing level of autonomy, ranging from human-controlled bots that carry out tasks that a human has
full control over to fully autonomous bots that perform tasks without any external influences

Q1. What robots can do?

1. Automate manual or repetitive activities in corporate or industrial settings.

2. Work in unpredictable or hazardous environments to spot hazards like gas leaks.

3. Process and deliver reports for enterprise security.

4. Fill out pharmaceutical prescriptions and prep IVs.

5. Deliver online orders, room service and even food packets during emergencies.

6. Assist during surgeries. Robots can also make music, monitor shorelines for dangerous predators,
help with search and rescue and even assist with food preparation.

Q2. What robots can’t do?

1. Perform surgeries but not soothe scared patients.

2. Sense furtive footsteps in a closed-off area, but not take action against gate-crashers.

3. Lead exercise sessions for the elderly but not ease their loneliness.

4. help medical professionals with diagnoses, but not empathize with patients.

5. learn from data, but not correctly respond to unexpected situations.

Q3. How are robots useful?

Robots are used in multiple areas, especially where they can alleviate strenuous tasks or complete
missions that are dangerous for a human to undertake. Robots eliminate dangerous jobs for humans
because they are capable of working in hazardous environments. They can handle lifting heavy loads, toxic
substances and repetitive tasks. This has helped companies to prevent many accidents, also saving time
and money. In the medical field robots are used for intricate surgeries such as prostate cancer surgery.
Robots are able to reach and fit where human hands cannot, allowing greater accuracy. Robotic benefits
in the medical field can be less invasive procedures and reduce pain for the patient when recovering.

Electric Motor
• An Electric motor is a machine used to convert Electrical Energy into Mechanical Motion.
• In an electrical motor the moving part is called the rotor and the stationary part is called the
stator.
• Motor uses magnets to create north pole and south pole.
• DC motor operate on DC power supply.

Gears
Spur gears
Spur gears or straight-cut gears are the simplest type of
gear. They consist of a cylinder or disk with the teeth
projecting radially.

Spacer
Spacer can be made up of plastic or rubber material which is used
to create a gap between metal plate and shaft rod. In case of
creating an insulation between power distribution and robot
body then it can be used.

What is coding?
When you want someone to do something for you, you tell them that. But you have to tell them
in their language so they can understand. The language that a computer understands is called a
‘code.’

What is block coding?

Block based coding is a method where the most basic commands are pre-defined as blocks that
can be quickly used by dragging, dropping and stacking them on top of each other.

Scratch Tool
Scratch is a programming language that you can use for free. By simply dragging and
dropping colored blocks, you can create interactive stories, games, animation, music, art, and
presentations.

How to start scratch?

1. To start, open your web browser and go to
https://scratch.mit.edu/

2. Click on “join scratch”.

3. Type Username (Unique) & password (Strong). Then click on next and complete the
process.

4. Click “Create”at the top of the page to start

the Scratch online editor. Once you’ve
saved your project, it will appear in your
“My Stuff” folder.
How to use?

1. Blocks palette - There are code blocks that can be used to control your sprites and stage
backdrop. All blocks are in different color.

2. File save and open - This option is used to save the project and open any project.

3. Script Area - Blocks are dragged into the ‘Scripts’ area and it will be combined with
other blocks to form scripts and eventually a project.

4. Start and Stop - ‘When green flag clicked’ block should be attached to start and red
button is used to stop the script.

5. Sprite - Sprites are the images or characters used to create scratch programs.

6. Backdrop/ stage Backdrop - is the background you want to add into a project.
ACTIVITY 1: Let’s move sprite

Step–1: Select a sprite of your own choice.

Step–2: Write code

Step–3: Click on green flag to start the code.

ACTIVITY 2: Code to say

Step–1: Select a sprite of your own choice.

Step –2: Write code.

Step–3: Click on green flag to start the code.

ACTIVITY 3: Lets Glide sprite

Step–1: Select a sprite of own choice.

Step–2: Write code.

Now you will see your ball gliding to random position.

ACTIVITY 4: Walking

Step-1: Open a new Scratch project.

Step-2: Go to ‘Choose a Sprite’ menu.

Step-3: Select sprite called ‘Avery walking’.

Step– 4: Drag and drop ‘When green-flag clicked’
block.

Step- 5: Attach a Repeat block and enter 20 in the space

given.

Step-6: Attach a ‘move steps’ block under the repeat

block. Enter 10 in the space given.

Step—7: Attach a ‘next costume’ block and a ‘wait

seconds’ block below. Enter 0.5 in the space given for
wait block.
Step—8: Click on the green-flag above to start the code. The sprite will start walking as soon
as you click it.

ACTIVITY 4: Dancing

Step—1: Open a new Scratch project.

Step–2: Select ‘Cassy Dance’ sprite.

Step-3 : Drag and drop ‘When green-flag clicked’ block

and attach a ‘Forever’ block to it.

Step–4: Attach a ‘next costume’ and a ‘wait’ block under the

forever block. Enter 0.2 seconds for the wait block.
Step– 5: Click on the green-flag above to s tar t the code. The sprite will start dancing as soon
as you click it.

PROJECT: Make a code for flying bird with wait 0.5 sec.
