Wild Fire and Carbon Management in Peat-Forest in Indonesia

Recommendations of the 3rd International Workshop "Wild Fire and Carbon Management in Peat-Forest in Indonesia
Palangka Raya (INDONESIA), 22-24 September 2011
1. Related to Central Kalimantan Province as the REDD-plus Pilot Project in Indonesia, there are some notes and recommendations: (1) Necessary to develop strong coordination & synchronization with KOMDA REDD-plus Kalteng, local/indigineous communities, NGO`s, private sectors and govtled demo activities on REDD-plus, (2) Necessary to avoid overlapping claims in terms of areas, outputs, activities & targets, (3) Essential to give mandate for subnational institution (if any) to coordinate whole initiatives in the sub national & leading communication role with the National, (4) Necessary to acknowledge & accommodate local knowledge & wisdoms into REDD-plus initiatives, (5) Engage local & traditional communities as rights holders, instead of just stakeholders of the REDD-plus. 2. As initial step towards empowerment and better coordination among researchers in Kalimantan proposed an university network (tentatively) known as the Trans collaboration. To intensify communication, coordination in research activities. To share the data across the network. 3. To construct integrated management of peatland in SE Asia, should work with local communities and use local knowledge. For making integrated management plans, it is important to perform sustainable agriculture using incentive driven approaches. Rehabilitation, reforestation/restoration and sustainable forest management are very important in order to combine the purposes of biodiversity conservation and carbon sequestration. Therefore, it is essential that community engagements, sustainable management and improved management are included in various carbon projects as REDDplus.

Kalimantan Universities Network (Trans Kal-UN)

consisting of 5 Indonesian state universities in Kalimantan (University of Palangka Raya/UNPAR, University of Mulawarman/UNMUL, University of Lambung Mangkuran/UNLAM, University of Tanjung Pura/UNTAN and University of Borneo/UB) with: (1) Proposed vision: a quality and accountable research of Kalimantan regional universities in support of the implementation of strategies to promote global climate and sustainable development for future generation. (2) Proposed mission: To strengthen and empower the regional scientists to get more actively involved by improving our regional cooperation and

The Governors Climate and Forest Task Force (GCF) Annual Meeting 2011
Palangka Raya (INDONESIA), 20-22 September 2011 Organized by Central Kalimantan Province Government
The GCF-2011 Annual Meeting was held on last September 2022, 2011 in Palangka Raya (Central Kalimantan, Indonesia). The Governors Climate and Forests Task Force (GCF) is a sub-national collaboration between 15 states and provinces from the United States, Brazil, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Mexico that seeks to integrate Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) and other forest carbon activities into emerging greenhouse gas (GHG) compliance regimes in the United States and elsewhere. JST-JICA Project Wild Fire and Carbon Management in PeatForest in Indonesia participated on this occasion during the poster exhibition session (Photos on Page 3) and the presentation at the stakeholder side event delivered by Prof. Mitsuru Osaki was entitled: Comprehensive MRV System

from the Long Term Observation.

A compact firefighting system for peat fire in UNPAR

By Dr. Adi Jaya (UNPAR) and Dr. Hidenori Takahashi (Hokkaido University)
The compact firefighting systems for peat fires are fitted out at University of Palangka Raya. The system, which consists of a three wheel motorbike, 700 liter water tank, a water pump, many fire hoses and nozzles, are supported by JST-JICA Project. The system was tested on August 25th, 2011 and used for actual fire fighting of peat fire near houses the next day.

New Indonesian Student

We are delighted to introduce Mr. Rony Teguh as a new student (Ph.D Program) at the Laboratory of Co-Creation, Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, Hokkaido University (Sapporo, JAPAN) from October 2011 under supervisor Prof. Toshihisa Honma and supported by MEXT Scholarship, Japanese Government. Mr. Rony Teguh also a lecturer at the University of Palangka Raya (UNPAR) and the member of the JST-JICA Project "Wild Fire and

Carbon Management in PeatForest in Indonesia" (FF Group).

Welcome Pak Rony!

Aerial & ground surveys after severe fire of 2009

By Nina Yulianti and Dr. Hiroshi Hayasaka (Hokkaido University)
To understand the role of 2009 fire near Palangka Raya, the CM1-2 group members (JSTJICA Project) conducted aerial and ground surveys in 2010 (March and September) and 2011 (4 times). Our study focused over Ex-MRP Block C North and Hampangen Educational Forest (HEF) of UNPAR in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Both areas experienced dangerous fires in dry months of 2009. The total number of hotspots (fire) reached 534 and 192 occurrences, respectively. This activities were supported by the JST-JICA Project on Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development Wild Fire and Carbon Management in Peat-Forest in Indonesia

Commemorating a colleague: Dr. Herwint Simbolon

We received the sad news that on October 11th, 2011 our colleague and friend Dr. Herwint Simbolon has passed away. He died unexpectedly on his 55th birthday. He was born in Ramunia, Deli Serdang, North Sumatera on October 11th, 1956. He took his PhD and graduated from Kagoshima University in 1993. He worked for the Research Center of Biology LIPI and as a key-person in many research projects between Indonesia and Japan, including JST-JICA Wild Fire and Carbon Management in Peat-Forest in Indonesia Project. Our community is shocked, voiceless and very sad. He will be missed by all of us, by his colleagues and all young scientists. We have lost one of our experts on Peat-swamp Forest Ecology. Our thoughts go to his family, relatives in Indonesia, colleagues and friends dispersed around the world.
