EXPLAIN

SPORE-BEARING AND CONE BEARING PLANTS

Spore-bearing and Cone-bearing plants do not have

flowers. Because of this they have their own organs used
for reproduction.

Let us first talk about how spore-bearing plants reproduce

How Spore-Bearing Plants Reproduce
Spore are cells that make reproduction possible without
fusing with other cells.
An example of a plant that bears spore are ferns.

13
Spores are found at the underside of leaves. They are
produced by a sporangium (sporangia). The sporangia
cluster together to form a sorus (sori).

1.Release of spores from the sporangia The students will listen.

Scattering of spores is normally facilitated by wind or water
current

2.Spores become gametophyte

Every gametophyte develops into antheridium and
archegonia. Antheridium is the organ that develops the
sperm while Archegonium is the organ that develops the
egg.

3. Sperm from antheridium swims and reaches the egg

The sperm from a antheridium swims with it's flagellum into
the Archegonium. Once the sperm reaches the
egg, fertilization occurs and zygote is formed.

4. Mature sporophyte possesses sporangium

Upon maturity, the sporophyte possesses sporangium that
contains the spores, and the cycle continues.

13
CONE-BEARING PLANTS
Cone-Bearing Plants
-a group of unique plants that are a part of
gymnosperms. These are referred to as conifers
(woody plants) and grow throughout the year. These
have specialized reproductive organs instead of
producing flowers.
-produce spore and gametes in addition to pollen and
seeds.

Example of cone- bearing plants

CYCADS
Cycads are gymnosperms distinguished by crowns of
large pinnately compound leaves and by cones, which
are typically borne at the end of the trunk in the centre
of whorled branches. Some cycads have tall
unbranched trunks with an armourlike appearance;
others have partially buried stems with swollen
(tuberous) trunks.

CONIFERS
Conifers are a group of cone-bearing seed plants, a
subset of gymnosperms. Scientifically, they make up
the division Pinophyta, also known as Coniferophyta,
or Coniferae. The division contains a single extant
class, Pinopsida. All extant conifers are perennial
woody plants with secondary growth. The great
majority are trees, though a few are shrubs. Examples
include cedars, Douglas-firs, cypresses, firs, junipers,
kauri, larches, pines, hemlocks, redwoods, spruces,
and yews. As of 1998, the division Pinophyta was
estimated to contain eight families, 68 genera, and 629
living species
13
How Cone-bearing Plants Reproduce

Cone-bearing plants have two types of cones: female

cones and male cones. Reproduction begins when one
of the pollen grains from inside a pollen sac on the
male cone floats through the air to the scale of a
female cone. A pollen tube then grows from the pollen
grain toward the female ovule. Sperm cells move
through the pollen tube and one of them fertilizes an
egg cell, which then develops into a seed. The winged
seed floats to the ground and begins to germinate. As
the top of the seedling reaches for light, the hypocotyl
straightens and the cotyledons spread out.
